Fancy A Game?

Boris Johnson gave us an over expressive version of Wiff Waff to the world shortly after the Beijing Olympics had finished. People that watched the London mayor describing that ping pong was actually once called wiff waff will remember it for quite some time.

I was so impressed by the handover speech that I have decided to dedicate this hub to 'Wiff Waff'.

Where did it start? What does it mean? And more importantly, can we still play wiff waff today?

Apparently the upper class's used to play wiff waff on their very large dinner tables in the 'olden days'. The game was played with cigar box lids and corks. The term 'wiff waff' came from the noise the paddle and the cork would make when struck together. I'm thinking these rich gits were terrible at the game and there was a lot of air-shots going on, damn cork.

Fancy a game of wiff waff? You can play this at work with your colleagues or play at home with your family.

If you are at work all you will need to do is use the empty desk that was cleared the other day because someone was fired and then you need to raid the office stationery cupboard. Make sure you knock on the door first, you don't want to catch the secretary and your boss in the middle of a photocopying session! Find a small rubber, or erasure if you're American, and a couple of hard-backed notepads (medium sized). Then you're away!

You can make up your own set of rules and points scoring, but remember it is merely a game for fun and nothing more. Have fun playing modern day Wiff Waff! You can set a reminder on your calendar. Wiff waff time.

p.s. If you're wondering why the colleague in the office was fired?! it was because he was seen in the stationery cupboard with the secretary. The boss was not happy. The excuse that was given - "we were trying to find a rubber".
