Virtual Tour Down Savannah Georgia's Bull Street
I'm going to try something new with this post and see if this is a mistake or not. It's kind of a walking tour of a cool section of Savannah. Except you'll be going down the middle of the street! Now that's something I would have liked to do, but the darn tour trolleys and cars were in the way. We're in luck it's a very beautiful sunny day. I think it's about 70. It's below zero where I am. Depending on how fast your internet and computer are it may take longer than actually walking it. Bring your sunglasses, there's a lot of glare out there today. On this tour you'll bump into all kinds of people - some all dressed up in suits...some getting their hands dirty...others waiting for customers...some that like to sit on benches a good part of the day...some with tattoos and looking hip - those would be the students of Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and there are plenty of them. The school has scads of buildings also. You're at the foot of Bull Street(at Bay) and by left clicking on the arrow ahead of you, you'll skoot on down the street - give the picture a chance to focus. Hey! I just found out that I can use the up arrow key to travel through without using the mouse even the hard part going around the squares. Appears that HUB doesn't allow Google Maps Street View which is very important for this post! I've put a link in that will take you to hopefully the virtual tour down Bull street in Savannah.
Just left click the picture first. Can use the other arrow keys to steer when needed. Neat. When you get to a square you need to skirt to the right or left. I'm going to go right at the squares going down and when I get to as far as I'm going I'll turn back and and I'll veer right at the squares going back to whence I came. We called that scooping the loop where I come from. If you're a lefty maybe left works better for you. We all have options! And you know if there's an intriguing side street we can head off that way and get lost and have lunch and maybe have a drink and well you never know we may get to like each other...or not... That's a big part of walking in a new place for me - getting lost meeting people and eating - Just have to make sure to get to the airport on time... When you get to an area that looks interesting you can use the hand tool in the top left corner to take a look around or better yet use those arrow keys - you can do a 360 degree turn. You can look up at the beautiful sky and down to pick up that lucky penny - make sure you see Abe's head though. Make sure to look up through those magnificent Live Oaks in the squares. Go ahead give it whirl. You can also left click and hold and turn the picture in the direction you want. We'll go through a pretty neat area and also five very nice squares - Johnson, Wright (which were built in 1733), Chippewa (1815), Madison (1837) and Monterey (1847) in that order. and you'll end up at Forsyth Park (1840's), which is below Gaston and if you've read Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil you'll remember what Joe Odom said about doing that. If you don't know you should read the book. I went when I was there and found a very enjoyable park. I had a very nice chat with some very friendly elderly ladies sitting on a bench with copies of the Watchtower to show me, but we mostly talked about Minnesota - they think it's very exotic there, but they weren't clear on where it is exactly. (eh, I just used very 4 times). Maybe we'll see them in this tour - they reminded me of the lady on the bench listening to Forrest Gump (shot at Chippewa Square). When we do get to Chippewa look for the flower bed (at Hull - straight ahead just as you turn to go around the square) - that's where Forrest sat on a movie prop bus bench and I learned the buses were going the wrong way too...that's right Danny, they played a trick on you...when you are just about leaving Chippewa Square there is a very good coffee place Gallery Espresso at the corner of Bull and Perry that is a hangout for locals and became my hangout when I found out they serve real good coffee for $1.25 and double espresso for $2. They say they are the oldest coffee place in Savannah and look like they are in a pretty old building, but in Savannah that's hardly worth mentioning. When you get to Liberty you won't be able to continue virtually on Bull - why google camera truck person?. Well, Ok, So turn left on Liberty this will test you a bit, but if I can do it you surely can. When you get to Drayton turn right. Next street will be Harris turn right. Continue to Bull! Turn left. You can also turn right if you have the time to see the block that runs up to Liberty. The last square is Monterey named after the Battle of Monterrey (they forgot the second 'r'!) and is the site of Mercer House (south-west corner at Gordon & Bull) which was owned by Jim Williams of our good old Midnight in The Garden of Good & Evil book. Further on past Gaston is Forsyth Park which is the beginning of the Victorian historic district - Savannah's first suburb and junior historic district! Well I'm going to head back turn left at Jones and maybe I can get in at Mrs. Wilkes for lunch. Why don't you join me? it's a little more than a block west just past Whitaker on the left at 107 W. Jones. Here's what it looks like from the street.

Thanks Anita. I drove down Victory on the way out to the cemetery - didn't have time to explore. Wish I had gotten out of the downtown more. Next time!

This is pretty cool. I lived in Savannah for a little over a year. I love Victory Drive and all the history there. And I especially love all the azalia bushes.
