Journey into the mind of a Poet

My earliest recollection of poetry was at a very early age, when my oldest sister would read us "The cremation of Sam McGee".

After 40+ yrs., the presence of the book she read from was long forgotten, yet the memory of the verses still linger.

I wanted to hear it once again, so what does any "internet savvy " person do to find something, yup, Google it.

I was amazed to find , not only a written form but also a video presentation of Hank Snow reading it. I am a tremendous fan of Hank Snow, but I couldn't succed in downloading that one, so I did this other one.

I just had to share it with you.

Through out my life I have held a deep appreciation of poetry, especially in it's simplest form "rhyme". I suppose, being the hopeless romantic that I am, Love Poems are my favorite. Then needless to say, I thought I should try my hand at a verse our two.

Journey with me for a moment as we "Walk among the Living" into the heart of a poet.

Silent Vow

Love, I wish I were a poet,

To compose a loving rhyme;

Of battles that we conquered

And mountains we did climb.

No one knows the trek we've taken

Nor the path that lies ahead;

For memories oft spoken

Are silent when they're dead.

To you I give what life remains

Within this mortal soul;

It's not enough,

I know it well,

Pray God, will make us whole.

At dawn when you awaken

This night will pass us by;

My dreams of you

Will be for you,

I'll wipe tears from your eyes.

I am a man, that's all I am

I hope you understand;

I give to you this promise,

Please give to me your hand.

The Cremation of Sam McGee? Oh, man, that was one of my absolute favorites growing up! I loved it! While most of my peers grumbled about having to memorize it parts of it, I jumped right in. It is, quite honestly, one of those poems that influenced my own writing to some extent, along with others like Wordsworth's "Daffodils". I really enjoyed the quiet, serene mood you've established with this piece. I envision a guy, sitting on the side of the bed, watching his much loved wife sleep and softly whipering this poem to her. Really enjoyed this.

I love that you remember something so precious--the times your mother read to you.
