Walk In Tubs – Comfortable and Easy Bathing
72Walk in tubs are a perfect solution for people who have
difficulty getting in and out of a regular bath, and this guide tells you
everything you need to know.
Walk in tubs are the perfect, indeed the only, solution for
many people with accessibility problems who still want to bathe normally in a
bath tub. Despite originally being an expensive luxury, the market for these
type of tubs has expanded considerably in the last 5-10 years and they are now
widely available and affordable to people on a wide range of incomes.
Accessibility, Safety and Comfort
There are many reasons that can prevent people from being able to bathe without help and assistance. Disabilities, injuries, or simply old age, can make it difficult to stand up after a long period of sitting, or leave you unsteady on your feet. For these people, a bath you can walk in and out of provides a huge amount of comfort and an improvement in life quality.
What to look for
Step Height. Since most walk in tubs require a step to get in and out, you should always be careful to locate a tub with a step height that you or your loved one can manage without strain. Many manufacturers will offer very low step sizes (as low as one or two inches) to make it extremely easy for those who might have trouble climbing in and out.
Non-Slip Surfaces. When accessibility is as big an issue as it is here, you should always check for non-slip surfaces built into the floor of the tub. A manufacturer who designs specifically for safety and comfort will always include this type of safety feature. If not, attachable non-slip surfaces are usually available to buy separately from good bathroom retailers.
Guarantee and Warranty. Since walk in tubs depend on a water seal function to prevent spills and leaks when the tub is full, you should always look for a tub which offers a long term guarantee on the door seal. It is even better to find a tub with a lifetime warranty, which is commonly offered by manufacturers.
Inward or Outward Opening Door. Another important choice when choosing a walk in is whether the door opens inwards or outwards. Although it might seem like a small issue, the direction of the door has an impact on factors such as tub size, water seal quality, and accessibility, so you always should know what you are looking for before you make an investment.
Extra Safety Features. There is a wide range of extra safety features that manufacturers include in their tub designs. Many can be useful and have a effect on which tub people ultimately choose to purchase.
- Seats. Seats are a common feature among these kind of tubs, and for someone who struggles to get up after lying down for some time, they can be an invaluable feature.
- Thermostatic Controls. Thermostatic temperature controls offer a thermometer setting to control the maximum and minimum water temperatures. This can be very useful to prevent accidental scalding.
- Hand Rails. A hand rail can also be very useful when it comes to getting in and out of your tub. Often these are an optional inclusion with walk in tubs,

The only good chance you have to get a low-priced walk-in bath tub is to go directly to the manufacturer. The problem here is that a lot of them are making their tubs in China and then sell them here in US. The company I found is Access Tubs inc. They sell directly to Costco US and Canada stores and their tubs retail for approx $2,500-3,500 USD. Their website is http://www.accesstubs.com.
As described, walk-in baths are designed for elderly, disabled and handicapped.
When shopping for a walkin tub, make sure to see if the it has hydroptherapy and/or air jetted systems installed (unless you are interested in a regualr soaker).
