Walking canes and sticks have been used for centuries. They were designed as an instrument to support the weight of an individual to relief the pressure on an injured ankle, hip, or other injury. The walking stick and cane has also been used as a fashion statement as well.

Whether the cane or stick is used for an injury or as a fashion statement the length is crucial to prevent any other problems, like a sprained back, etc. The following method for measuring is recommended.

How to Measure

Standing upright with your arms hanging straight down by your side and looking forward, have someone measure from the floor up to the crease of your wrist. Make sure the measurement is taken on the opposite side from your injury. As an example, if your injury is to your right knee, take the measurement on the left side. This will ensure that you will have the proper length when purchasing your walking cane or stick.

Fashionable Walking Canes and Sticks

Many people today use such devices as the cane and stick as a fashion statement. They have been used by actors in television and movies as part of the persona of the character. Cases in point are the television series of Bat Masterson and the current hot show, House. Dr. Gregory House uses his walking cane with great effect on the series.

Other people use them as part of their persona by having the cane and stick handcrafted using exotic woods, gold and silver inlays, or even using a bull’s organ as the stick or cane. What ever your preference, there are many businesses that can help you in choosing the right stick and cane that fits your taste.

As a Defense Weapon

There have been many through the ages that have used the cane and walking stick as a weapon for defending themselves. And I’m sure that there are plenty of courses that teach the art of defense using the cane as a weapon. Just check the internet or your local directory.

Serious Use

Let’s not forget that the primary use for these devices are for the alleviation of pain, whether from an injury or handicap. Have a professional help you chose the correct walking cane or stick for you. Then if you want a cane or stick that is unique, then go for it.
