Many families are now enjoying hiking for a part of for their entire vacation. If looking for a walking holiday close to home consider National, state or Provincial parks which can provide an inexpensive and healthy activity that is fun. If vacationing in a foreign country or a different part of your own country a walking holiday can easily be incorporated into your itinerary. Some tour operators such as Intrepid Travel and HF Holidays offer special walking holidays for families.
When family hiking the following tips can increase your enjoyment:
Planning your walking holiday
Have the kids take part in the planning by discussing the hiking choices and let them have a say in the decision. If older they can also help with a small part of the research.
Create a hiking packing list including a first aid kit, sunscreen, sun hats, etc. Have each child pick out a packsack as you will give them a few light items to carry during the walk. If taking young children dress in bright colors so they can easily be seen. Involving your kids in the planning will increase their enjoyment.
Distances
When on a walking holiday with your family travel shorter distances and at a slower pace. Depending on the age and hiking experience of the kid consider an easy walk the first day progressing to more challenging trails. At first don’t push the kids too hard, let them enjoy the experience and appreciate what they have accomplished. You may include a backpacking trips as the kids get older and more experienced.
Breaks
When family hiking take more frequent breaks of up to 15 minutes every hour. At break time have a snack, observe the scenery or take a close look at a plant. Bring lots of snacks including energy bars, trail mix, chocolate bars, fruit and a drink. A picnic lunch can also be a fun experience for kids.
Safe hiking
Take care when family hiking when climbing over rocks, walking along a slippery trail or when crossing a stream. Teach your kids to identify poison ivy, mushrooms, animals and other potential dangers. Tell your kids what to do if they get lost and give them a whistle for emergencies.
Teach your kids
Family hikes are a great opportunity to teach your kids. Take a nature guide and have your kids identify the plants, birds, animals and terrain they are likely to encounter. Teach your kids to carry out all their garbage and other trail etiquette. If you have very young children keep things interesting with trail games.
Kids look at things on a smaller scale. Take the time on your walking holiday to slow down and enjoy each nature, the scenery and your experiences together.
