Make Walking A Habit

According to researchers in the Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina in Columbia,  walking shortly after a meal is a highly effective way to burn energy. You can get a double boost , and burn more calories as well. Walking is a easy and convenient exercise.

Instead of plopping your down in front of the TV set, or sitting at the computer, take a nice leisurely walk after your evening meal. Sitting on your butt by the way promotes fat-forming,  fatigue,  and grumpiness.  Wouldn't you rather have fat burning and a pleasant rush of energy you get from a short walk instead?

A healthy walk or or light exercise program after your evening meal may also help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep according to the Mayo Clinic Sleep Disorders Center in Rochester MN.  Light evening exercise may also help ease late-night cravings for high fat foods and sweet sugary snacks.

A  light 10 minute  walk started 15-20 minutes after your meal is over is all it takes to stretch your muscles and adjust your metabolism. Do not walk immediately after your meal, it could cause acid reflux or other stomach upsets.

Keep the pace comfortable, the most effective is a slow sustained walk.  Avoid walking briskly, that could make your food harder to digest.  And above all try to enjoy yourself.

CrazyBeanRider,

Great post on walking! I have been doing light walks after meals for years. It does indeed have an increased effect on calorie burning(metabolism), is helpful for digestion, and quite simply makes you feel better.

Indeed, much better than flopping down on the couch with the remote!

Exercise science has always been my passion. I live in NC right now, but attended Slippery Rock University for my degree in Exercise Physiology. I only mention this since you make note of the exercise science dept. at USC. I did not know they had one. That's great!

Keep walking it off!

Hi,

Good information. I should try to do some walking myself, and with the crazy hours I keep, it would probably be a wise decision to do it before I go to work, and give up 10-15 minutes in front of this computer.

I hadn't heard before that walking can deepen your sleep. I used to not sleep through the night, then something changed (I have no clue what) and now I do sleep very soundly, so soundly in fact, that I hear NOTHING. My alarm is set on full blast right next to my head, and I can sleep through that at times, yet my daughter, who sleeps at the other end of the house can hear it. Go figure lol,,,

Thanks again for sharing,

Trish
