Wall Clocks
75Wall clocks come in a huge range of styles to suit all decoration tastes. Amongst the different types of wall clocks, there are: Pendulum wall clocks, decorative wall clocks, digital wall clocks, large wall clocks, novelty wall clocks, antique wall clocks and of course the kitchen wall clock just to mention a few.
Contemporary Wall Clocks
If you are after a contemporary look there are a number of options available for the domestic or commercial setting. Silver, platinum and black wall clocks help to create a contemporary feel in any room. The style of numbers, clock hands and shape of the clock is also crucial in achieving the contemporary style you are achieving. Letters in block or minimal style are more contemporary. The hands of a contemporary wall clock should also be along these same lines. Simple clean lines are what should be chosen.
Classic Wall Clocks
If you are after a more classic look in your home or business. Decorative wall clocks come in a range of styles. Antique wall clocks and pendulum wall clocks can be authentically antique or reproduction. Antique denotes any item over 100 years old. Obviously to purchase an authentic antique wall clock is going to be very expensive and may require restoration, hence adding to the cost. Some antique clock mechanisms are as good as the day they were made, ensuring that time is kept with precision. However, some old clock mechanisms can be rusted or even have broken parts. To find a good clock maker is difficult in this current digital and technological society. Antique wall clocks are collected by clock collectors as famous as Paul Keating, who had a very extensive French clock collection.
Reproduction Antique Wall Clocks
Reproduction antique clocks may be a good solution. These can be purchased at many quality furniture and home decore businesses and can vary in style. Wooden wall clocks can be made with distressed wood to give the surface of the wood an aged appearance. Paint finishes on both a wood or metal wall clock can also give a rustic appearance. Paint is applied in layers and rubbed or sanded back on the edges to reveal the colour underneath. This gives the appearance that the wall clock has been used for years and repainted through the years to match various changes in fashion.
Retro and Vintage Wall Clocks
Vintage wall clocks and retro wall clocks do not come under the category of antique, as they are not 100 years old in style. They are generally wall clocks with a very distinctive style from a particular period. For example a retro wall clock may be typically mission brown, bright orange or bright lime green. These distinctive colours were used extensively for all home wares in the 60’s through to the early 80’s. The shapes of wall clocks during this era were also very distinctive and include the sun shape. This style had a central round clock face and was decorated with cone or triangular shapes attached around the circumference of the clock face. The materials used for wall clocks during this era also enabled wall clocks to come into their own. Plastic and light weight metals enabled wall clocks to be easily attached to the wall in any situation. It also meant that households and businesses could afford to purchase a wall clock for every room in the house. Previous to this clocks were made by hand and were a luxury item in many instances.
Ticking Clocks
A pendulum wall clock, chiming wall clocks or musical wall clocks can add a special type of ambiance to a room or home. The rythmic swinging of a pendulum and hourly chimes can be a relaxing part of any room. Many people however cannot stand the sound of ticking clocks, particularly at night. If you are one of these people then chimes and music may not be for you. Choosing a modern wall clock will often mean that the mechanism is quite small and the ticking almost silent. A digital wall clock will also have no ticking sounds.
Position
The place the clock will be situated is important in choosing a good wall clock. Kitchens for example are often dirty places. They have steam, vapours from cooking and oil spraying about at times. It must be easy to remove and clean kitchen wall clocks to ensure they remain in good working order and easily and clearly able to be read.
Oversized Wall Clocks
One recent trend in wall clocks is oversized wall clocks. These are often made of metal and are essentially just a circular frame with numbers and hands welded in place. A large wall clock of this design enables the wall colour to be seen through the gaps in the frame. Contemporary wall clocks of this type command a large wall or space to do it justice. They can also be quite effectively used outdoors, but again if they are attached to a short wall, they can look rather odd. In a home with raked ceilings where there are large expanses of blank wall, an oversized wall clock can look very effective.
