When design inspiration strikes it often leads to wall tiles being added somewhere in the home. One of the reasons tiling is so popular when it comes to home improvement is that they are attractive to look at – if you have ever tiled a wall or surface you will know the feeling of satisfaction when you get to stand back and admire the handiwork! Tiles also offer a lot of room when it comes to design and creativity. They can be used to create almost any style or impression that you so desire, such as classical, luxury, traditional... the list goes on and on. They are also relatively easy to fit in your home and can be installed by someone with minimal DIY knowledge. One final reason why tiles are so popular is that they are a relatively affordable way to improve your home.

Types of Tile

  • Mosaic Tiles

If DIY is not your kind of thing, do not worry, because you can still have wall tiles installed in your home, and mosaic tiles might be the solution. Mosaics generally consist of several tiles (either ceramic or other materials) which are pre-attached to a backboard. All you have to do is cement the backboard to the wall, and voila, you have your tiled wall. You will probably need to buy multiple mosaics to cover the full area of your wall, and you should always be sure the surface is perfectly flat or the grout lines will be uneven to look at.

  • Glass Tiles

Glass is an increasingly popular tile type for use on walls, with several types available:

  1. Clear. These are not clear as in colourless, but clear as in you can see through to the back.
  2. Bubble. Bubble glass tiles are designed with small air bubbles throughout, for visual effect.
  • Recycled

For the green-conscious buy recycled glass tiles are available from some manufacturers.

  • Frosted

These are manufactured with frosted class for visual effect.

  • Ceramic

The most popular type of wall tiles is ceramic. It is usually the cheapest, most common and often the easiest to install.

Other types include granite, concrete, stone, and even metal.

Cutting Tiles

To fit around the sometimes awkward shapes of your home, you will at some point need to cut tiles into the right shape. To do this you should use a steel ruler, a tile scorer and a piece of thin wire. Use the ruler to mark the line you will cut, the scorer to score along that line, and the piece of wire to apply pressure on both sides of the tile, which will cause a clean cut. If you have a large area of tiles, and thus a lot to cut, you should consider investing in a tile cutter, which does the job for you.

Other Tools you will need: wall tiles, waterproof grout, adhesive
