Wanna See a Truly Surreal Movie?
57Several years ago when I like had money and such I purchased a copy of " Fellini's Satyricon" one of the most visually bizarre movies Ive ever seen. Released in l969 as the swinging Sixties were starting to run down and Cinema as going through a Renaissance of it's own this was still a peculiar film. Set in a dreamlike Ancient Rome that could only exist in the imagination, it center;s around a young gay man's attempt to get his young lover back. Pretty radical stuff back in 69. But the plot is almost incedental here. It's the wild surreal landscapes populated with all manner of prostitutes, hermaphrodites, freaks, and all manner of grotesques. Some of these weird characters would sooner fit in one of the Star Wars films then in Ancient Rome. The story does have enough elements of classical Roman myth to succeed as a historical epic, but what an epic. This had to have been "trip" movie in the early 70's. One can clearly see it's influence on the films of Ken Russell as well as many of more wild cult films of the 70's.(David Lynch is reportedly a fan). I strongly recommed it because there was and still is nothing like it. It shows us how cutting edge films as well as popular culture was in the Sixties and how dishwater drab our culture is today.
