Most people know, or have heard this mantra of breakfast  being the most important meal of the day, yet millions of  people worldwide either skip it completely or make do with a  cup of coffee. This is a huge mistake and does not only  influence your day but basically your general health.   Remember, breakfast is the first food, and therefore fuel  your body gets after about 6 to 8 hours sleep, and even  longer if supper was the last time you ate anything.  Breakfast, break fast, get it? Your body needs to  re-energize and replenish the low levels of some nutrients  like protein, which is not stored by the body. Therefore  breakfast is like a cold glass of water in the face, a very  crucial source of energy.   It can also play a part in preventing health problems such  as diabetes and other diseases. Because of not eating for so  long your sugar levels will be pretty low. Having a healthy  breakfast just brings the levels back up to where they  should be. Also missing breakfast probably means increase  snacking, usually on high calorie foods, and bigger lunch  meals leading to overeating.   Breakfast also provides you with many vitamins and minerals  your body needs to start the day. Your body in the morning  is like a car on a cold winter's day, it needs to be warmed  up to function properly for the rest of the day. Breakfast  provides that function. If you don't start correctly its  very difficult to catch up afterwards.   A healthy breakfast can also provide you with the benefits  of many food groups in one meal. As an example, you can have  whole grain toast (bread or cereal group) and peanut butter  (protein group) with an apple or banana (fruit group). Add  some milk and you have even added a fourth group.      I know we lead busy lives, but to be honest, stop making  excuses and discipline yourself to get up 15 to 20 minutes  earlier. We are not talking pancakes and sausages here  people. Heck, even if you just grab a fruit it would be  better than having no breakfast at all. Seriously, if you  want to know why you feel so lethargic throughout the day,  do not skip breakfast.
