War as a matter of perspective

War, the good the bad and the really bad

The concept of war corresponds with many emotions.  For a warrior it can be excitement. For the manufacturer of weapons its greed.  To a mother it can be pride or fear.  Some wars bring hope and some despair.  We must explore closely what war is and not so much what it means if the path of wisdom is to be pursued.

As the winner of a war, you have many advantages.  History is written by the winner so that the war was just and glorious, at least on their part.  Both the winner and loser have the advantage of moral high ground.  What you and I know of war is only what we read, hear and see on TV.  We hear the good, the bad and the gory of any war but all of this is merely to guide our perspective.

In 1812, we Canadians beat back the Americans and maintained our borders.  Who is to say that we would have been worse off for losing?  Who is to say that the Americans are not better off for having been beaten?  These are all matter of speculation and perspective.  No consensus of people can say definitively that war is either good or bad.

Death seems to be the primary cause of negativity towards war.  At least for some.  To some death is glorious and well received, while others balk the thought of their own mortality.  If death were universally welcomed, war would seem like a fair and wonderful thing indeed.  As life is not universally welcomed, war can not always be bad either.  When one distances themselves from the emotional thoughts and really looks at it, this planet could do with a few billion less people right?  But no, that idea is absurd.  We have been raised and programmed to believe so and that there is the universal law.  A thing is what it is based on belief.

In conclusion.  If you believe that war is never the answer, than it never is.  If you believe that war has its merits, than it does.  If you are without belief, than you are with nothing. Thanks for reading

It is true that nothing would be the same without its opposite. Therefore if there were no war there could be no conventional peace; no anarchy, then no tranquility; and if there were no death, would life be as sweet?
