Just What is The World of WarCraft

The World of WarCraft is the single most popular game in Internet history. Building upon the legacy of M.U.D.s, Ultima Online, and Everquest, it can only be said that they very well may have perfected the art. With over 10 million users and an estimated $25 million in earnings every month, a person will be hard pressed to find a stronger company.

The success appears to be due to three different aspects of the games that appeal to a large cross section of gamers. The first is over all game depth, the second is content development, the third is quality.

This is not a game for people who cannot make a decision. Gamers can choose from two different factions (Horde and Alliance). These are your proverbial White and Black hats. After a faction is chosen, there are a whole slew of choices to be made from character class to race to profession. This is only the tip of the iceberg as far as content goes. A gamer can choose to raid, quest, hang out at the tavern, or farm for gold by creating items and trading them to other players in exchange for in game money or gold. Players have been known to spend days at a time playing without noticing the sunrise or the sunset. This has caused somewhat of a stigma that we will address later.

One of Blizzard's strength's is in overall content development. While tradition online game companies have been satisfied with developing a world and letting it go, Blizzard Entertainment is constantly refining existing content and developing new content for the players to enjoy. This is a commitment that has made them tremendously successful. In the past 5 years, Blizzard has developed 3 expansions with a 4th coming out in November, Wrath of the Lich King, and the players are rabid for it.

The final aspect that keeps them coming back is the quality. As a player of its predecessors, Uitma Online and Everquest, the details are absolutely stunning. The story lines are intriguing, the dialogues are well thought out and the NPCs actually contribute a great deal towards the games story line. While there is always room for improvement, Blizzard is really pushing up against the current technological barriers created by Internet Speed and Processor speed. in other words, there is only so much you can do before either the internet or the computer can keep up.

There is a social stigma attached to the players of the World of WarCraft that is extremely undeserved. I have personally seen people spend hours by themselves setting up Facebook pages deriding players of the World of WarCraft who are spending time playing a game of heroism and bravery with people scattered around the world. They are using the internet to be the types of people they have always wanted to be and let's not forget that several studies have shown that the use of video games to express negative emotions has actually proved to be therapeutic.

The World of WarCraft has become a lifestyle for a great many (read millions) people. I know families that play together and actually communicate with each other as they try to gain a shared goal. How many families can you say that about!

As with anything that has developed a following as large as the World of WarCraft's, there are always going to be products that are associated with it.The world of WarCraft is no exception.

Due to the above mentioned complexity a cottage industry has been developed around strategy guides, (Hint their not like the ones we had growing up!)The interesting aspect is that it's necessary to purchase a guide matches your faction. For instace, if you play for the Horde then you need a Horde Guide, whereas if you are an Alliance player you will need an Alliance Guide.

Gold is a a key aspect in WarCraft due to its scarcity, one could almost write an econ paper on the dynamics of WarCraft Economics (I think someone actually wrote a Doctoral These on it) hence the need for Gold farming Guides.

Action Figures have come a long way since George Lucas Invented them which is why its no surprise that WarCraft Action Figures are actually more for collecting than for playing. (NO Timmy you can't open that its a Series 1 worth $250. ) I've seen them and they are absolutely amazing.

With a game this size, there are thousands of stories to tell which is why there are also a large number of Books, Comics, and Graphic novels available to fill in the gaps left by the games. You can find a great many of these products at Amazon.com, feel free to check out the links below.

There is a whole "World" of people and events happening right now in the World of WarCraft, I encourage everyone to at least give it a try.

Thank you
