Warning Labels: Can I Quit Smoking? (Day4)
72Chantix
I must have been delusional three days ago to think I could put down my cigarettes and instantly become a non smoker. In researching the stop smoking aids, I have come to the conclusion that unless it’s a product like Head-On, where you can apply it directly to your forehead, there are side affects, some actually worse that tar and nicotine.
I have a friend who went through most of the products out there and finally chose Chantix as her drug of choice. In the brochure the warnings said to “stop using this medication and get emergency medical help if you think you have used too much medicine, or if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.” But as you read more it also states to “stop using this medication and call your doctor at once if you have any mood or behavior changes, or if you feel agitated, depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself“.
I had worked with this person for over a year, and know that she was an educated, stable person with a happy home life, and two beautiful children. After a week on Chantix, her personality changed drastically. This is my observation of one person, but after listening to her I decided Chantix was not for me.
Her week started out very well, she was calm, funnier than usual, no cravings, began to lose weight, she looked and felt great. Then she began to have vivid dreams, which at first seem perfectly normal and attributed to nicotine withdrawals, but turned ugly fast. In our conversations, she mentioned that she had thoughts of killing her husband. She began researching and came across this article in the New York Magazine, and it was exactly what she was experiencing. She immediately consulted with her doctor, and stopped using the drug . More Warning Labels
Why are there warning labels on most all products we purchase? I’m just going to take a guess and say, some people are just plain stupid, and have no common sense. After reading the story about Chantix, I have decided to start reading the fine print on everything I plan on using to help me quit smoking.
Warning labels became much more popular after 1992 when Stella Liebeck at the age of 81 won $3 million from McDonald’s after a cup of coffee she purchased was spilled and caused third-degree burns on her leg. Gueez, who would have known that McDonalds coffee is actually hot?
I remember when the warning label on a pack of cigarettes used to say something like, If you smoke you’ll get lung cancer or your nose will fall off, but, in my hot little hands, I have a pack of Marlboro’s and all it says: ‘SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: Quitting Smoking Now Greatly Reduces Serious Risks to Your Health’. I’m assuming if they listed all the health risks, a pack of cigarettes would come with a 500 page book.
Lysol Disinfecting Wipes has a warning “Hazaradous to human and domestic animals”,
Household bleach warns “do not discharge this product into lakes, streams or other waters” without the written approval of the Local Sewage Plant Authority or the EPA.
Glass cleaner warns “unplug all electrical items before using”, the emphasis on the word all.
"Caution: The contents of this bottle should not be fed to fish." -- on a bottle of shampoo for dogs.
This is my fourth day in my quest to stop smoking, and it’s not going well. I ran out at 3am this morning and purchased a pack of cigarettes. I have to have at least one more cig as I continue to research stop-smoking aids.

I don't know where I got in on the progress of your quest to stop smoking. However I hope you have managed to conquer it. I love your writing. I am a fan.
I quit smoking about 15 years ago and I can honestly say it was the hardest thing I ever did. Having said that I am happy to say it was the best thing I ever did and I have never looked back. My advice, be kind to yourself and try, try, try to just go cold turkey. Cuddle up on the couch and give yourself 1 week. You will be so proud of yourself you absolutely will not want want to screw things up by picking up a cigarette.
I quit because I was sick of worrying about smoking. Just think, you won't have to run out of the room when a "quit smoking" commercial comes on or stand in the middle of a snow storm to have a cigarette.
Thank you for the good advice. I'm still trying to find my niche. Thank you for visiting.
Trust your self. You can do everything.
June, thank you for the vote of confidence.
Hi there friend! I hear you about the warning labels...and you know what? I am ditzy here...I wrote about the dangers of lysol and dogs being allergic to it, BUT yet I have been using lysol wipes in my house to disinfect!! What a ditzball, I didn't read the label!! Thanks for reminding me...
By the way....how are YOU coming on your smoking...I have access to a natural herbal product..You paint a stripe of the herbal solution on your cigs and you are smoke free in a week!! Would this be something you are interested in??? If so, shoot me a message!! Glad to help, I had the same challenge and this stuff works...and it is natural...and you don't stop smoking, you do what you do...it makes you WANT to quit so you do!!! GREAT HUB
Weath, thank you for the info, I will send you a message. Thank you for visiting.
I too have struggled with smoking. The warning labels on this aids (and all medications) scare the bejesus out of me. What's the use of quitting smoking if I end up in prison for killing my husband?!
I did read once that smokers do not remember their dreams. The few years in my life when I have not smoked, I have had such horrible dreams (kidnapped, murdered, chased, robbed, raped, etc), that it is honestly worth it to have two cigs a day just to surpress them!
Thank you for the hub. It is important that people realize that warning labels exist for a reason!
Leslie, I hope you don't mind me calling you that, I appreciate your visit.
You can do it! I quit about a year ago. I had help from my daughter. She kept coming home from school telling me how bad smoking was, finally she guilted me enough I was able to do it.Good luck, I know it is not easy.
Thanks for the encouragement, Sandi!
I will hope for you jiberish cause it seem that I have the same problem. I have COPD from smoking and I quit for 6 months and made the mistake of smoking one and only one I told myself...well as you know that didn't work and I'm back smoking a pack a day! Good luck I hope you have more will power than I!
Place Kick, I don't seem to have any will power when it comes to smoking. But I'll let you know if I ever quit. Too bad you picked it back up again. Thanks for visiting.
I gave up smoking years ago, I can't remember exactly when but I read a book by Allen Carr and have never smoked since. I don't know how he does it but he does and it works. Then I gave the book to my sister-in-law and she quit too. To this day i have not touched a cigarette or even wanted one and i used to a smoke somewhere between 1 and 3 pkts a day.
I'll have to look for that book, and see if it works for me. Thank you for the tip.
