2007 Season

Although the Washington Nationals have not grabbed the National League East title since they moved to Washington, they began the season with the hope that this season would be different. Although the team lost several key players to free agency during the offseason, the 2007 season began on a good note. The team signed several key free agents to recoup their losses, and began the season with dreams of playoff glory. The team managed a historic mark for pitching by years' end: no pitcher ended the season with double-digit wins or losses.

The season did not start well during the month of April. Injuries plagued the Nationals and began to quickly dash their playoff hopes and winning streaks fizzled and died. A 9-25 start, 6 key players placed on the disabled list due to injuries, and outfield errors gave the team a disheveled and disrupted outlook on the entirety of the season. However, the return of some of the injured players helped the Nationals come back to win 11 of the next 14 games. The luck was not to last, as their star hitter was injured in June and lost for the remainder of the season.

The season was not a total loss, as the Washington Nationals managed to piece together a second-to-last finish in the National League East standings. They finished middle-of-the-pack in the Wild Card standings at the end of the season, and this finish gives the Nats hope for 2008, as this improvement could mark a turnaround in the Nationals fortunes. Although the season was marked with several records for historically bad scoring, the season ended with a red-hot winning streak, with the Nationals managing to take five of their last seven games against the powerhouses of Philadelphia and New York (Mets).
