Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog was a creation of Joss Whedon during the Writer’s Guild of America strike which began near the end of 2007. It is a low budget, high quality short musical film. Whedon you may recall has created several TV shows which include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse. Whedon fans won’t concern themselves with previews, trailers, or what anyone else thinks of his work. They will watch it all regardless, most likely many times.

This is however about Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris) who is applying for admission into the Evil League of Evil. Nathan Fillion, who has been with Whedon before as the Captain of Serenity in the TV series Firefly plays Dr. Horrible’s nemesis Captain Hammer. Felicia Day plays Penny who is the love interest to both male leads.

While it was originally released free on the web one act at a time, the entire three acts are now available for free viewing at the official site: http://drhorrible.com. No need to feel all piratey as this is the entire 43 minute film.

Why You Want To Pay For It Anyway

For starts the film is pure genius. Joss Whedon along with his brothers Jed and Zack have created a witty, science fiction film featuring surprisingly smart lyrics with a message. What that message is exactly is that it doesn’t take an enormous Hollywood budget to produce quality work.

Another reason you want this DVD at home is the bonus features. The most original commentary idea I have ever witnessed “Commentary! The Musical” is included. The entire commentary is also a musical sing along featuring the Whedons and actors. It is at once corny but yet so smart and creative that you cannot help but love it. There are some behind the scene featurettes and even fan submitted shorts for their own application into the Evil League of Evil.

While I think anyone who enjoys TV and film would enjoy this for it’s originality a Whedon fan cannot miss this opportunity to sample his work for free. If you ever enjoyed Buffy, Angel, the crew of Firefly, or have recently watched Dollhouse by all means check out this free to watch sci-fi musical.
