FlashForward is a new ABC Drama, much in the vein of hugely popular hit show Lost, that debuted to critical and public acclaim in September of 2009. TV critics called it a complex, smart, and entertaining show that has all the components of good TV.

The basic premise of FlashForward is that on a perfectly normal sunny day in the fall of 2009, every human being on the planet Earth blacks out for two minutes and seventeen seconds. Everything happens that you might think would happen after an event like this--planes and cars crash, people die unexpectedly.

But the really strange thing that happens is that every person experiences a "FlashForward." While everyone is incapacitated for just over two and a quarter minutes, everyone sees visions of themselves at a time 6 months in the future on the specific date of April 29, 2010. It is a huge mystery, of course, as to what is really going on.

FlashForward centers on FBI Agent Mark Benford (Joseph Fiennes) and his wife Dr. Olivia Benford (who is played by Lost alum Sonya Walyer).

At the time of the blackout, Mark Beford is in the middle of a car chase with suspected terrorists. By his side is his partner Demetri Noh, who is played by the epic John Cho of Harold and Kumar fame.

FlashForward's Dark Tones

FlashForward starts to take a darker tone as some individuals begin to believe they will be dead and gone by the time the 6 month threshold has hit, since, like Demetri Noh, they didn't experience the mysterious visions reported by the majority.

As for Bedford, he sees himself relapsing into alcoholism, while his wife sees herself with another man. These are very confusing things to see for these people, and the personal issues swirl around as the FBI, led by Stanford Wedeck (Courtney Vance) tries to put together the pieces of the puzzle.

Do the dark undertones of lack of control and fear reflect the culture of today? I guess we'll see--if the show becomes a multi-season hit!

Marc Guggenheim, who created ABC's Eli Stone, came on board after the pilot episode as showrunner and executive producer, and after the show was picked up for its first season, left to work on other projects.

Who will like FlashForward?

If you are enjoy watching action-packed and mysterious shows like Lost, then you will probably have some affinity to this show. There are a lot of similarities between the two, namely that the people are being affected by strange events and things beyond their control.

If you are interested in post-apocalyptic themes of shows about cataclysmic events, this ABC show could be something you add to your must-watch TV list.
