Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final - Russia player profiles

Svetlana Kuznetsova

A real enigma, Kuznetsova is in many people's eyes the most talented of the Russian players, but her confidence has been fragile in recent months. After starting the year by reaching three finals, she seemed set to take over the No 1 ranking when she reached the French Open semifinals, but then folded against Dinara Safina and hasn't been the same player since.

A knee problem has been partly to blame, but how much will Shamil Tarpischev want to risk a player who looks vulnerable at present? Having said that, this descendant of a top-level cycling family has considerable Fed Cup experience, having played in two finals - she was a member of the team that beat France in 2004 despite losing her two singles, and she won the match that saw Russia beat Italy in 2007.

Vera Zvonareva

The teenage top-tenner lost her way in 2005 and 2006, but at 23 she has bounced back with a great 2008 and has a proven record in Fed Cup finals. She was called in to replace the nominated Elena Likhovtseva in the decisive doubles of the 2004 final, she and Anastasia Myskina secured Russia's first Fed Cup title amid ecstatic scenes in Moscow's Ice Stadium.

This year she has reached four finals, winning her sixth career title in Prague, and was a semifinalist in Miami and the Olympics, where she won a bronze medal. She used to get terribly upset when losing even a single point, but has learned to control her emotions and look a little less like the world is coming to an end.

Elena Vesnina

The different dynamic of team tennis means Russia's captain Shamil Tarpischev has frequently called on Elena Vesnina who clearly fits well into a squad made up of more illustrious players. The final will be her seventh tie, and she has won three of her four doubles, most notably when she and Nadia Petrova beat Venus Williams and Lisa Raymond in the decisive rubber of the 2007 semifinal in Vermont to see Russia through against the USA.

The statuesque 22-year-old, who lives in the 2014 winter Olympic host city of Sochi, has won three tour doubles titles, including this year's Tier 1 event in Indian Wells with Dinara Safina. She has also been in the top 50 in singles, having reached the fourth round of the 2006 Australian Open.

Ekaterina Makarova

Talk about a baptism of fire - making your representative debut in the final of the biggest team competition open to you! That's the reality facing the 20-year-old Muscovite Ekaterina Makarova, who finds herself drafted into the Russian team for her Fed Cup debut despite being ranked 56th in singles and just 10th among the Russians.

She's also the 10th-ranked Russian on her doubles ranking of 68, but the fact that she has won nine titles on the ITF Futures circuit is probably what swayed Shamil Tarpischev to call her into his squad for the trip to Madrid ahead of higher-ranked players. She has played regularly with Alisa Kleybanova, who might have earned the call-up, but the left-handed Makarova has got the nod. She is no relation to Elena Makarova, who played in 25 ties for Russia between 1992 and 1999.

Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final - Spain player profiles

Carla Suarez Navarro

A rising women's star with a single-handed backhand? Yes, it's true, and in the month of her 20th birthday, this native of the Canary Islands finds herself carrying a massive burden if Spain is to make anything of its first home final for six years. Her breakthrough tournament came at this year's French Open when, as a qualifier, she reached the quarterfinals, but equally impressive was her Fed Cup by BNP Paribas singles debut in April's semifinal.

With Spain severe underdogs away to China, Suarez beat the vastly more experienced Peng Shuai 63 76(4) to set Spain on its way to an unlikely victory. At a diminutive 1.62m (5ft 4in) she has to do a lot of running, but with home support has the ability to get under the skin of the more illustrious Russians.

Anabel Medina Garrigues

Spain's top-ranked singles player, Medina would have got more credit for her exploits if she hadn't picked up the baton from Spain's two most successful women players ever, Arantxa Sanchez and Conchita Martinez. She could well have to play both singles and doubles in the final, as she's Spain's only player in the top 50 (twice as high as the Spanish No 2 Suarez Navarro) and is the reigning French Open doubles champion partnering Virginia Ruano Pascual.

The 26-year-old from Valencia made her debut in 2003, and this final will be her 12th tie. She has won her last four Fed Cup singles matches against useful opposition, but has never beaten a top-ten player in the competition - Russia's team is likely to be made up only of top-tenners.

Nuria Llagostera Vives

If you're a tennis player from the island of Mallorca, you must be good. Mallorquinas Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya have both been world No 1, and while Llagostera, Mallorca's top woman player, hasn't quite got that far - her highest ranking was 35 - she has proved highly effective in Fed Cup this year.

At a tiny 1.56m (5ft 1in), she has been a mighty mouse and was Spain's star in April's semifinal against China, beating Zheng Jie and Peng Shuai in straight sets to see Spain to victory in three rubbers. She also beat the wily Francesca Schiavone in three sets in February's quarterfinal. Now 28, she has fought back into the top 100 after sliding to 686 because of a bad wrist injury sustained in 2006. She could well play singles on the second day if Medina is saved for the doubles.

Virginia Ruano Pascual

The most successful member of the Spanish team turns 35 a week after the Fed Cup final, but don't think she's just there to add a bit of experience. Virginia Ruano has won 41 doubles titles, nine of them in Grand Slam events. Her partnership with Argentina's Paola Suarez was one of the most successful in recent years, the pair winning all the majors except Wimbledon.
