Water Damage Repair Help
70The proper water damage repair can make the difference between saving you money or costing you thousands of dollars and maybe even losing your house. There are many aspects of water damage that the average person does not know how to handle or even thinks about. Water can be a great thing, in fact we have to have it to survive, but it can also be very distractive if its energy is released into a house or home.
There are two main causes of water damage in homes. These are internal causes and external causes. Both of these can be devastating to the home owner and both can result in literally thousands of dollars of damage. Most homeowners are in no way equipped or trained to handle the kind of problems that can arise when excess water is released into the structure.
Internal causes are usually caused by some type of problem related to the plumbing. Although this is not always the case. When she was about 5 years old my sister wanted a swimming pool so she and a cousin put the garden hose into the basement window hoping to create an indoor pool. Luckily my mother found out before too much time and shut the hose off. But we spent several hours mopping up the water that had accumulated. We still remind my sister about this at family gatherings.
Aside from the errant 5 year old, the majority of water damage repairs are going to be caused by leaking pipes or other plumbing fixtures. You may think that a slow drip would be better than a major leak but they can actually cause much more damage. If you have a slow dripping pipe the water can actually accumulate for weeks, months, or years before it is noticed and cause all kinds of rotting problems. A major leak on the other hand will usually be noticed quickly and the water turned off. This will necessitate drying and repairs including ceiling water damage and drywall water damage but if taken care of properly does not cause rotting problems that can ruin the integrity of the house.
The second cause of excess water that will result in water damage repair is that caused by external factors which usually means Mother Nature. Flooding is the cause that is usually seen in the news and gets all the attention but in reality roof and window leaks can cause an awful lot of damage. From a health stand point flooding can be very bad because there is awful contamination in the water from sewage and industrial chemicals. So not only do you need to worry about removing the water you also must cleanup any potentially toxic waste that may have accumulated in your house. The average home owner is just not equipped to handle this.
If you have water damage it is very important that you talk to a professional as soon as possible. You also should consult with your home insurance provider. There is a clause in most policies that excludes some water damages from coverage. That is why in the US there is national flood insurance which is something you should look into if you live anywhere that can be affected by flooding or slides.
If you have water damage here are some tips to help make the water damage repair process as easy as possible.
