For some of these causes a little preventative maintenance goes a long way. Have your water heater and plumbing inspected once a year. Periodically check your foundation in the basement, if you have one, and look for signs of moisture (darker color, mold, etc.).

There are a number of companies you can call in the Los Angeles who are to give you an estimate on your problem. Some specialize in flood mitigation while others in foundation issues and mold removal. Few of them specialize in both fire and water issues, especially if you had a small fire and the fire department put it out with hoses.
Depending on the problem, your homeowners insurance usually will cover the majority of the services required to renovate your home to its original condition. Your first step will be to call your insurance agent and inform them about the problem. I had a water softener that ended up leaking while we were away on vacation. We ended up with over an inch of water throughout our finished basement. It's called basement water damage folks. Standing water soaks into the hardest woods and got imbibed in our drywall up several inches as well. The baseboards were soaked and several items had water stains on them once everything was dried out.
Our agent recommended a particular company and they did a great job. They were out within a few hours with a super wet vacuum system to get the water out of the carpeting, several high velocity fans and a high capacity dehumidifier.
The fans and the dehumidifier ran for several days and a person from the company came out every two days with a meter that showed how wet either the carpet, baseboard or drywall were. Once the meter read a certain amount they removed the fans and dehumidifier and then the restoration work began.
At this point, the insurance company sent an adjuster to look at the furniture and carpet to see what needed to be done to make things right again. They told me to get estimates from a couple of companies on fixing the water damage on the legs of several pieces of furniture and then they would issue a check to those companies for the repairs.
Having researched several companies in California, there are many who are excellent at repairing water damage in Los Angeles particularly. One company known as ‘Citrus Fresh’ offers a ten percent discount for mentioning their online ad. Your insurance company can only recommend someone and cannot force you to use their company of choice. That is why a little research first goes a long way. ‘Citrus Fresh’ offers great advice on choosing a water restoration company. They even give you steps to adopt before the water restoration company get there that makes the whole process easier.
Here is what they recommend. First, if you can determine where the water is coming from then shut off the source to the leak, immediately call a plumber to make repairs on the affected lines. Move any boxes, items and furniture out of the affected areas and try to remove as much water as possible using a mop and/or a wet/dry vacuum to prevent molds from occupying a place on the surface.
Wipe out the water from hard surfaces, especially from the furnitures to minimize any water satins. Turn on the air conditioner in the summer to lower the humidity and open the windows in the winter to let out humidity and improve the texture and quality of air. Repairing water damage takes a lot of effort and patience so stay calm because you are going to need it.
