Can Dehydration Impair Thinking?

Consuming an adequate amount of water is an essential part of good health, and is vital to the learning process as well. Water actually helps facilitate the transmission of neurological impulses in the brain, that occur during the thinking process.

Leaving the brain, which is about 80% water, underhydrated leads to impairment in memory, attention and concentration. A level of ten percent impairment is evident when the first signs of thirst are felt. Symtoms increase exponentially as dehydration continues.

Besides mental effects, excessive thirst and dehydration can cause physical and behavioral problems as well. Students that are underhydrated often feel irritable, exhausted and distracted, and can experience blurry vision and headaches.

In the United Kingdom a program has been started to ensure that students are well hydrated throughout the day, and water bottles are being kept within arms reach of children.
