Water Filters
Water is life. Safe and pure drinking water helps your good health. Water filter serves this purpose.
Let us now understand water filters:
Is the water you are drinking safe? Water contaminated with bacteria, lead, and pesticides are present in all waters. These contaminations and pollutants need to be filtered and removed in order to make the water safe for drinking. Water filters serve this exact purpose.
Wide range of water filters are available today. Most of them claim to be the best to meet your need of pure drinking water free from any contamination.
Most water filters use reverse-osmosis, activated carbon, or ultra-violet rays to clean, filter and purify water and make it safe for drinking.
How effective is a water filter depends on the technology used to filter and purify the water. You need to study and research to know the kinds of water contaminants present in your area and the kind of water filter that will be perfect for you.
Let us now understand the different types of water filters and how they work.

Types of Drinking Water Filters
Keep in mind that there is no single water filter technology that will eliminate all contaminants from the water and make it 100% safe for drinking. Some of the water filters use more that one method of purifying water and making it safe for drinking. Here are some of water filtration and purification methods used in water filter
Reverse-Osmosis (RO) filters: Reverse-osmosis filter is best to clean and purify water with multiple contaminants. Reverse Osmosis removes inorganic chemicals such as salts, metals, lead, minerals, nitrates, asbestos. Most RO water filters have carbon pre-filters and post-filters to filter organic chemicals such as pesticides, trihalomethanes (THMs) etc. The carbon post-filter helps to improve the water’s aesthetic properties.
Pre- and post-filter cartridges should be replaced annually.
Most RO systems mount beneath the sink and connect directly to the plumbing or the water source. A small water tank stores clean water and tainted water drains out through a line connected to the sink trap.
RO filters generally cost from $400 to $700.
Distillers: Distillers are excellent water purifiers and remove almost any water contaminant.
Distillers electrically heat water and converts it into steam. The steam then condenses and turns back into water in a separate water collection chamber, leaving behind 99 percent of the health- and aesthetic-related pollutants. The pure water collected in the water chamber is almost 100% safe to drink.
Distillers need to be filled manually and consume a lot of electricity, and may take several hours to produce 1 gallon of water.
Distillers are relatively inexpensive and the cost varies from $100 to $400.
Activated carbon (AC) filters: If your water tastes, smells, or looks bad, a filter containing activated carbon (AC) will probably make it much more palatable. AC filters also help to remove chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, radon, THMs, and some inorganic chemicals including lead. In some carbon filter units, ultraviolet is used to kill bacteria.
Carbon Filters need to be replaced according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Price range of Activated Carbon Filters is between $ 30 to $ 500.
