It's hard to believe the watermelon carving is an ancient art. Yes, it's been around for a long long time. In Japan and China watermelon carving is done instead of pumpkin carving. Clever use of the natural colors of the watermelon (red, green and white), results in amazing carved images. Most often the image is created by using relief technique, which creates the design but removing the "flesh" around the design. Anything from simple words cut out of the watermelon to elaborate intricate designs. It is absolutely amazing the beautiful sculptures they have been created.

In the US fall comes with jack-o-lantern carvings to decorate the home. A watermelon carving can make a colorful addition to summer time decorations. Cut off the one side of the watermelon and scoop out the flesh to create a hollow area and then cut your jack-o-lantern as you would when using a pumpkin. This can be a wonderful centerpiece for your summer barbecue.

A good set of carving and paring knives is all you need to start creating watermelon carving.
