Waymarking
63An Introduction for Adventurous Travelers
Waymarking is an exciting hobby closely related to Geocaching, of which there are some articles posted on Hub Pages already. Geocaching is a sport involving treasure hunting using a GPS device to find items hidden by other players of the game. Waymarking is similar in that a GPS is used to mark the location of interesting and unique places around the globe. A waymarker then records the coordinates at www.waymarking.com and the required description for that category.
What do you need to go Waymarking? Here's a list:
- A handheld GPS unit, not one for cars.
- A digital camera
- Internet access to log your finds
- Free membership at waymarking .com
So, what's fun about Waymarking? Well, firstly, it is a fascinating way to learn about the places you visit and share what you have learned with others. The hundreds of categories you can log will expand your fun while traveling, making your road trip a scavenger hunt. A waymarker might focus on just one category or try to post one of each. For each category found and logged, statistics are recorded on a personal profile. Virtual medallions are earned for milestones (ie: 50, 100, 250 waymarks found). Some participants enjoy "collecting" the little categorical icons on their profile.
Photos are very important for each waymark you create. They prove you made the effort to visit the location as well as adding color and interest to readers of the page.
What do I prefer to do in this sport? I have almost 200 waymarks listed online in about five states. They range from listings of roadside attractions, to Survey Benchmarks, to historic boundary stones. Overall, its the adventure and unexpexted discoveries that makes waymarking fun for me. I have been to amazing places I never would have thought to see if it weren't for the ideas given to me by this hobby. And it is great knowing that my posted waymarks have helped increase the enjoyment of others on vacations and outings. The site is becoming a great database for travel.
Finally, I plan to write about some of my very unique waymarking adventures from the past year or so. I hope you will enjoy those articles and use them as inspiration to try this sport!
