What Causes Heart Disease?

Heart disease is caused by a reduced flow of blood to the heart. Most cases of reduced blood flow to the heart are cause by hardening or blockage of the arteries. When the arteries become completely blocked, it can cause a heart attack, also known as myocardial infarction.

In a heart attack, some of the heart’s tissue can be damaged, a condition known as ischemic necrosis. Unfortunately, many heart attacks are fatal. Only when a patient gets to a hospital in time does that patient stand a good chance of recovery.

If a patient receives an injection of magnesium sulfate within three hours of the onset of a heart attack, their chances of surviving are increased by at least 20%. If you suffer from heart disease, there are several treatments available that can help prevent a heart attack.

Treatment for Prevention of a Second Heart Attack

If you’ve already had a heart attack, your chances of having a second heart attack are high, especially if you do nothing to try to improve your condition.

If you’ve already had a previous heart attack, here are some of the treatments that may be recommended to you by your physician:

  • Angioplasty or heart surgery, including bypass surgery.
  • Prescription of anti-coagulant medications to keep blood from clotting.
  • Prescription of drugs that reduce heart arrhythmias.

Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease

Whether or not you’ve had a heart attack before, there are many things you can do to prevent heart disease, or to help reverse it if you’ve already started to shown signs of heart disease. Remember to speak to your doctor before you begin any of these treatments.

  • Take 81 mg. of aspirin daily.
  • Increase exercise in order to strengthen the heart muscle.
  • Reduce stress levels.
  • Reduce your daily intake of sodium.
  • Use higher quality oils like olive oil, and avoid trans fats and Cholesterol-rich foods.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Eat more fiber-rich foods, and reduce sugar, white flour, and other refined carbs.

Remember, always be sure to talk to your doctor about the steps you should take to protect and heal your heart. Only your doctor knows what’s best for your unique situation. But most people will need to change their diet and start exercising.

Some people will have special circumstances that require them to act under the direct care of a physician. It’s never too late to start taking better care of your heart. Even if you already have heart disease, you can take steps to improve your heart health so that you can have a better chance to stay healthy and live a longer life.

Very real and very useful. We are living in the modern time of heart problems. Not so much for the 'love related' issues, but more stress related, though.
