Fans

Installing a ceiling fan (or utilize personal fans), in the largest room of the home will allow the thermostat to be set 3º to 6º cooler—saving approximately 25% energy used for cooling during the summer. Since heat rises, reversing the fan rotation in the winter will distribute the heat more evenly throughout the room.

Thermostat Adjusting or Replacing

Adjust the temperature on the thermostat before going to bed, or leaving the house for an extended period of time.

Installing a programmable thermostat will provide even more savings when it comes to cooling your home. When utilized correctly they can save approximately $150 annually.

Reusable Air Conditioner Filters

Reusable filters pay for themselves in the first six months of use and will probably last at least seven years. Not only does it save you money, it helps to save the environment at the same time.

Windows

  • Apply reflective or solar window film to windows to help reduce cooling costs in the summer.
  • Use heavy lined draperies or mini-blinds to keep warm or cool air inside the home.

Maintain Filters

Change or clean one or two times a month. The efficiency of the air conditioner unit greatly diminishes with a clogged filter. It not only causes the unit work harder, it may cause it to break-down.

Registers and Vents

Regularly vacuum registers and vents. Dust and lint build up and constrict airflow and make the unit strain to provide cool air. Therefore, causing unnecessary wear and tear on equipment and increasing the risk of costly repairs.

Outside Units

Planting a tree or shrub to provide shade to the outside air conditioning unit will greatly improve it's efficiency.

Roof

If you need to replace your roof, when it comes color think "light." The lighter the color of your roof, the more energy-efficient. Light colors reflect the sun's light while dark colors attract the sun.

Plant a Tree

Planting trees that provide shade to the home reduces cooling costs as much as twenty-five percent. While trees do help cut cooling costs, you do not want to place it so close to the home that it may pose a threat for storm damage.

Thresholds

Replace thresholds if you notice drafts seeping through, or place a blanket or towel under the door.

Thanks for the cost saving tips. I try to remember to close the curtains in summer but hate not to be able to see out the windows and hate the dim light.
