We Need American Trade's People

America Has The Best Workers!

Everyone has had an appliance, a car or just about any piece of machinery in need of repair, bu government seems to want all of us to go to college. We hear; “If you get a college degree, you will be more successful.” It is a nice statement, but it is not always true.

Many plumber’s make more money than teacher’s do. If your washing machine breaks down, do you make sure a college graduate tries to fix to. The optimum word is tries. Of course the simple answer is, NO! You want a washing machine repairperson to fix it. Why, he/she has been trained to perform this task. Colleges do not train people to perform these jobs.  America is losing its trade’s people.

Instructors from the Timber Framers Guild with students and an instructor from the American College of the Building Arts at a timber-frame workshop during an International Preservation Trades Workshop at Belmont Technical College in Ohio.

This article will give you an idea of what I am saying. I also evidentally can't post pictures, I need to learn that trade.

I’m not pushing Union’s, don’t worry about that. If you wish to join one, that’s a decision I believe each worker should answer him/herself. Do I imply Union’s are holding back individuals wanting to work in a specific trade, no? A decision such as this should fall squarely on the shoulders of every worker.

It seems in today’s world many are looked down upon for choosing a trade to go into. Not everyone should go to college for many different reasons. Maybe the person doesn’t want to go to college, the individual may not be able to get into college academically or doesn’t have enough money to go, perhaps one wishes to take up a trade and many more reasons.

Our country is starting to have a shortage of qualified trade’s people in many different fields. The owner of a Plumbing Company recently told me; “It’s getting very difficult for me to find qualified plumbers, it takes four years of schooling to get your piece of paper saying, you are certified.”

I just wanted my toilet fixed but I learned a lot from our conversation. I found out that this person was a third generation plumber. He took over his father’s company, as his father had done. The company has three locations and 24 hour service. If you needed a plumber, in an emergency, would you not want a PROFESSIONAL like this?

What if the electricity went out in your house at night? You mean no TV or computer? Try no air conditioner! Car problems, you better have a good mechanic. Almost everything you depend on needs a trade’s person to fix it. This also includes building things. Want to build a house, try doing it without a trade’s person. That may be difficult, especially if it has to be built by code.

Many of us take these people for granted, but when we need them, whoa! We can’t get them do perform their service fast enough, to satisfy us. We need to do more than, find someone else. What happens when there is know one else? There is only one answer to the question. People need to be trained in trades.

We must make this known before and in high school. Kids have to know they should not be ashamed for not wanting to go to college. For so many years we took pride in “American Worksman/Womanship.” This goes for factory and mill workers also.

The United States is now fully dependent on other countries for produced goods. If we produce goods in our own country, are we not the one’s to benefit from it?

Great HUB Harvy, Belmont Tech is in my neighborhood. It's about 18 miles from Moundsville.

Belmont Tech has classes in HVAC installation and repair, instrument repair for industrial facilities (including PLC programming), pipefitting, plumbing, carpentry, and engineereing technology (2 year associates degree).

The industries that are still in existance (far too few) hire directly from Belmont Tech graduates. These are good paying jobs with starting wages with a range of $14-$18/hr.

Local construction contractors also hire from Belmont Tech., and many Belmont Tech. grads form their own small businesses. Employing many others in this area.

Spot on Harv! MY best friend has been a home remodeler for 27 years, works only by word of mouth and has trained his son for the last ten years to eventually take over the business. Because he is both dependable and guarantees all of his work he has never had to advertise in the last 15 years. He consistently has more work than he and his contractors can handle each year. This field of expertise as well as other skilled trades will need dependable, honest craftsman in the near future.

Tom,

You got it, we need people with these skills. If they don't get trained now, we're up the creek in a few years.
