We are what we wear?
67the self-expression of dress
Does what we wear matter? Should women be able to wear revealing clothes whenever they want? These kinds of questions over dress come up all the time, especially with all the media focus on young female stars and their behaviour at night clubs etc. Is it ok to wear revealing clothes...we should have the freedom to do so, right?
I'm not so sure it has so much to do with freedom, I think it has more to do with the image you want to portray of yourself. What are the motivations behind wearing revealing clothing? I dont know...I'm sure they are different for every individual, but when we get dressed we know that certain items of clothing portray a certain image...
What is going too far? I think that is something that may differ slightly from person to person but we all know when a line had been crossed. When women want to be valued for their thoughts and opinions, I think its possible that a skimpy outfit may take away from that. To distract someone from the beauty of your mind with glimpses of your body may not be the best thing to promote the value of a woman.
Should a woman try to look her best? Of course. Every woman in my opinion should dress in a way that expresses who she is and protrays an image that is important to her. If a woman has decided to dress in a skimpy way she has to accept the kind of image she is portraying. If she wants to be liked for who she is rather then how she looks, or if she would like people to look at her face when she is talking, rather than her chest, she may not want to go the revealing route.
I think what we wear does matter in that it is an expression and presentation of at least an element of who we are. Let us keep this in mind when we choose the outfit we want to wear...freedom is wonderful! Use it wisely!
