Sonics Move In Jeopardy?
44Move to OKC in Jeopardy?
Let me be clear. I live near Oklahoma City. I want an NBA team to move there. I was able to go to a Hornets game during their second year there, and the atmosphere was great. I was excited when Clay Bennett purchased the Sonics are started taking steps to move the team to OKC. I look forward to a day when I can watch Kevin Durant run up and down the court in the Ford Center.
That said, Clay Bennett and his ownership friends are in danger of messing this whole thing up. The latest word on the move are e-mails that were sent between Clay and his partners. In them they are discussing their intentions of moving the team to Oklahoma City as early as April 2007. Clay declares that he is, "... a man possessed! Will do everything we can. Thanks for hanging with me boys. the game is getting started!"
Possessed or not, it is clear they were talking about moving the team very early on. In fact, I think the entire NBA world was all well aware that Bennett purchased the Sonics with the move of the team to Oklahoma in mind. I would even wager that David Stern was well aware of the group's intentions.
So why would Bennett then write in August 2007 in an e-mail to David Stern, "As absolutely remarkable as it may seem, Aubrey and I have NEVER discussed moving the team to Oklahoma City, nor have I discussed it with ANY other member of our ownership group. I have been passionately committed to our process in Seattle, and have worked my (tail) off."
You're right, Clay. That is remarkable. Not only is it remarkable, it's unbelievable. It is beyond me why he would even say that to Stern so late in the game. It is a bold face lie (something the major news groups won't say) and if they are not more careful, they are going to mess this move up.
If Bennett and his cohorts don't stop being so brazen, they're going to end up owning a team in Seattle they really don't want. Which would be sad day for the Sonics and Oklahoma City.
