Search engine optimization doesn't need great content. If it were so, those fake money making scam sites won't be found on the front page of Google and yahoo. This means, how ever good your content is, you won't get traffic unless you do something that is actually important for search engines. But good content is advisable for making your visitors come back regularly and don't just take your blog or website a waste of time.

What search engines want? Search engines are full of millions of websites and blogs trying to get to the front page to get high traffic. But, not all websites can make it to the front page or even to the first 10 pages of search results for a specific term. Why? The answer is Backlinks.

What are backlinks? Backlinks are those link on the web that link to your website or blog from other popular and non popular sites. The sites getting high amount of traffic have hundreds of thousands of backlinks. This is how search engines decide if your site if good or bad, important or not.

You have to decide a backlink. Suppos I want my blog to be on the first page of Google when people search 'Strategic management' my website should have lot's of backlinks with word 'Strategic Management' hyperlinked with my website address.

For example : Strategic management

You will need some hundred or thousand of such links to get you blog or website on the front page of Search Engines.

How to decide the backlink word? Deciding a backlink word is one of the toughest things to do. Go to Google Adwords Keyword Research Tool and search for some term like 'cat food' and you will get this result.

Don't forget to change 'match type' to exact. See the upper right corner of the image. and change country to all countries and territories

So, now you know how many people are searching for cat food in a month. Some 12,000 searches for cat food. So, if you prefer to link your website with cat food, you should have word 'Cat Food' hyperlinked to your website or blog address. Now, the question is how to get backlinks from other websites? How to get backlinks from other websites and blogs?

To get backlinks from other websites means, getting more websites to link to your website or blog with using the word you selected. Example: Cat food. You can get your website linked in many ways.

1) Article marketing: You can write articles consisting of some 300 to 400 words with link back to your website or blog in the footer or body and submit it to article directories like ezine articles and article base.

2) Add your site to social bookmarking sites: huh, there are lot's of them, including Digg, Stumbleupon, Mixx and Delicious to name a few. Add your website with your keyword linked back to your site.

3) Blog Directories: Add your site to blog directories. While adding your site to all these sites, make sure you use your keyword. Keep in mind that that you will get traffic only from that specific keyword.

4) Create Squidoo lens and hubpages. Yes, this is a good one. Just like I have created a hub, you can too. Or create a Squidoo lens. Write articles on them and get backlinks just like I have added one for Strategic Management above.

5) Ask the website or blog owners to include backlink to your content on their blogs or websites. This will get your direct as well as search engine traffic.

Among all these, I tell you, article marketing and Creating Hub-Squidoo pages have been the best. If you can do all these, Search Engine optimization is a layman's work. But, there are some things you should consider before anything else. Don't ever give up. If you give up, you are gone. Just don't give up.
