Your wedding band is one of the most important pieces of jewelry you will ever own. It is also one of the hardest decisions you will have to make. There are numerous types of wedding bands, gold, silver, platinum, with gemstones or not.

The most common wedding band, especially in the past was the plain gold band in either white or yellow gold. The color of the gold or the decision of getting another metal such as platinum or titanium is probably the first one you should make. Platinum is known as a very durable metal that does not bend or scratch easily. The only problem with platinum is that it only comes in a silver or white gold type color. Titanium is a metal that is gaining popularity for use in wedding bands because it is strong yet light in weight.

Wedding Band & Engagement Ring

Some women want their wedding band to match their engagement ring, and some couples want to have matching wedding rings. An option to matching rings if one person prefers a different metal than the other is to get the same ring in different metals. You can also find many bands that combine two types of metals.

Gemstones

The next decision to make is whether to have gemstones in your band. Because you will probably be wearing, the ring daily for a very long time you should think about the durability of the stone you put in it. Some of the harder stones are diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, some of the softer ones are opals, garnets, and amethysts. While the softer stones are pretty they scratch and chip more easily.

Buying a Wedding Band

If the actual comfort of the band is an issue look for a band that has rounded edges. The inside of the ring should have a curve on the inside of the band instead of a flat surface. There are many women's engagement/wedding ring sets that fit together and may be more comfortable than two separate rings. Some people find a thinner band to be more comfortable than a wider one.

The next choice you have is where to buy your rings. This once again depends in part on your budget. Wedding rings are available in most department stores as well as jewelry shops. The big box discount stores such as Costco are even carrying them. Just be sure to do your homework before you buy and if you do go with a department or big box store ring be sure to get it appraised as soon as possible to make sure you did not pay too much.

The choices are unlimited. Some couples are even deciding to tattoo wedding bands on their fingers. The idea is really to find a that ring fits your style and your lifestyle at a price you can afford. Spend some time looking online and in jewelry shops to get an idea of what type you like, and of prices before you purchase your wedding band. You will be wearing it a long time.
