Many people believe that the tradition of wearing wedding bands started in Egypt. It is thought that the Egyptians created the first type of wedding band. Rather than being crafted from silver or from gold, it was actually created from a plant stem. These round wedding bands that the Egyptians wore were intended to represent their neverending love. The Romans brought a new significance to wedding bands and developed the ring to signify laying their 'claim' to the lady. It was considered a symbol of ownership and was meant to be worn on the ring finger (fourth finger) in a very similar way to how the Egyptians wore their wedding band rings.

Puzzle Wedding Bands

The Asians and the Arabs invented Puzzle wedding bands for a very interesting reason. A puzzle wedding band is actually created from several rings that lock together when they are worn properly. These rings are often rather difficult to put together correctly and lock in to place. It is said that when Arab men were planning to be away from their wives for a long period of time, they would instruct their wives to wear these puzzle rings. The idea behind it was to make sure that their wives would be faithful to them and not take off their puzzle ring, while their husband was out of town.  If they did take the ring off, it would be very difficult for them to put it back on again correctly so their husband would find out that his was unfaithful in his absence..

Early American Wedding Bands

During colonial times,  Americans thought that all types of jewelry were of low moral value or worth and because of that jewelry was prohibited. Once Americans took the pledge that they would stay together and live together, a common thimble would be presented to represent token of love. The thimble could be considered to represent a type of 'engagement band'.  Once married, the lower part of the thimble would be taken off, and just the top portion would be left on the finger. The remaining part of the thimble that would be worn looked very much like a typical ring.

Significance of a Wedding Band

In most cases a wedding band is just a simple ring that is made from precious metals such as gold, silver or platinum. A titanium wedding band is also a unique wedding band choice. Wedding bands are commonly worn on the fourth finger, also called the ring finger. The thumb is considered the first finger so the ring finger is the fourth finger as you move away from the thumb. A wedding band represents a commitment to stay together and designates everlasting love. One way toadd to the significance of your wedding band would be to include a name or a message on the inside of the band. If wedding bands will be exchanged between bride and bridegroom, each one could have the name of the other person etched into the inner band. This would create a unique wedding band and could make up a wedding band set. Wedding band sets are very popular. It is becoming more popular to etch the date of the engagement or wedding on the inside of a wedding band.

One other way to make an even more unique wedding band is to put a birthstone in the ring. It has been thought for many years that, there a gemstone represents the day a person was born. Donning a wedding band that includes your birth stone is thought to bring good health and luck and also help ward off evil. Another interesting idea would be for the bride and groom to exchange birthstones through their wedding bands. This could help build a feeling of intimacy and attachment even if one of the parties is not geographically close to the other.

More Unique Wedding Bands

Many wedding bands are made entirely from either white gold or yellow gold. There is another option, however where you can combine both types of metal in the same wedding band. This type of wedding band is called a two tone wedding band. If you look online and in stories, you will find that the majority of these two tone wedding bands are crafted without diamonds o gemstones.

One other interesting option that you can select for a two tone wedding band is in terms of the type of finish on the band. Typically, gold rings are finished in three primary ways, the first would be the high polish look, the second would be a more dull brushed finish and the third is an irregular 'hammered' type finish. You can create a unique and quite elegant wedding band using two tone gold by mixing finishes on your ring. For example, you can make a two tone wedding band using yellow gold with on just the edges, or rim, with the rest of the band made in white gold. Then, you can pick a more dull finish for the center part of the band- the yellow gold part-  and leave the edges, which are in white gold, with a high polish finish. This type of two tone wedding band is a great choice for a ring when you don't want to include diamonds or gems.
