Just as choosing the cake or the right flowers are important to a wedding, find the right photographer is another important element in a vast list of things to consider when planning your big day. Wedding photography might not seem as important as choosing the dress or sending out the invitations, but it is very important aspect because it is these images that you will look at to remember one of the most important days in your life.

Since wedding photography is the only tangible evidence of a wedding, many will pay more for a photographer than they will for some of the other aspects of the wedding. These costs can vary dramatically depending on the level of the photographer’s involvement, whether you use an amateur or professional photographer or even deciding between traditional and digital image capturing.

If you do not use a wedding planner, make sure you get several estimates and look at several different photographers before deciding on this important part of your wedding.

Wedding Photography Information

Some basic wedding photography information that most brides and grooms don’t think about when they choose a photographer is their basic involvement with the wedding. There is more to wedding photography than just snapping and shooting a camera. It is always a good idea to spend some time with the photographer and understand what each other expects from the whole wedding shoot.

One thing that might help ease this process is to set up a pre-wedding shoot. By having a pre-shoot, it allows the photographer and the couple to get comfortable with each other and the couple to be comfortable in front of the camera, and also allows for more posed-style of shots. While many feel they want all the photos to look natural and taken during the wedding, at the same time, they also want these photos to look like the ones in the bridal magazines.

The fact is to get great photos, it sometimes is necessary to have a staged photo shoot before the wedding to get magazine quality photographs.

Another aspect of wedding photography is it might be necessary is to have a makeup artist on hand during the pre-shoot to help decide on the right look and feel for the wedding. Also selection of the right lighting and what props and backgrounds will be used on the wedding day should all be considered during the pre-shoot.

It is always a good idea to have all this planned out and decided before the wedding. If not, don’t expect your pictures to come out how you envisioned them no matter what type of wedding photographer you use.

Amateur Wedding Photography

To save on wedding costs, some people choose to use an amateur photographer. This could be someone who just started taking photos to build a portfolio or it could consists of a friend or family member who decides to help out.

Don’t just assume that by using an amateur wedding photographer that all your pictures are going to be substandard. There are certain things you can do to help make sure these photos are going to have a level of quality that competes with professional wedding photography.

One of the things that might be necessary to have is a photo coordinator work with the amateur photographer so that they can help gather family members and guests together for group shoots and other specific location shots that are part of the overall photography. Also, the photographer should have several different cameras available including a digital camera. The digital camera can be used to take preliminary photos that can be viewed by the coordinator.

When it comes to your wedding, if you don’t have a wedding planner, make sure you place certain people in charge of certain aspects of the wedding that way you do not have to make managerial decisions on what is supposed to be the best day of your life.

Professional Wedding Photography

Sometimes, it is best to just let the professionals do the work. Sure, this is usually more expensive than having your cousin shoot the photos, but in the long run, you will have great photos of your wedding day to look back over for the rest of your life.

Professional wedding photography has evolved over the years and can consist of a single photographer to having a full crew that handles lighting, make up, a videographer and shots taken from different cameras from different angles for the same scene.

Whether using a wedding planner or choosing a photographer yourself, it is always a good idea to meet the photographers in advance and get an idea of the style of photography they shoot and what their photography package includes.

Wedding Photography Packages

They say the devil is in the details and this is never truer than when it comes to wedding photography. There are so many aspects to photographing a wedding that many people don’t realize all their options. From portraits to group shots, to shooting the rehearsal through the wedding and reception, there are a lot of little details that should be talked about and known if they are included in the overall package.

Wedding photography packages range from budget, moderate, upscale and luxury. Budget packages can run around $1000, moderate packages between $1000 and $3000, and upscale wedding photography packages running as high as $5000. Luxury photography is everything else after the price of upscale and usually consists of exotic locales and pricey weddings that run as high as a million dollars.

Basic packages are usually one photographer doing one to four hours of work to develop an album and a limited number of prints.

Moderate packages might include extra hours and an assistant.

Upscale packages will usually have two photographers that cover around eight hours of wedding coverage plus special albums for guests and family.

Luxury packages involve full camera crews that cover multiple locations and offer unlimited amount of coverage.

Digital Wedding Photography

With the constant development of high quality digital cameras, digital wedding photography is a cheaper alternative to traditional professional wedding photography.

With a digital camera, you can have friends or relatives take photos of the wedding that are of good quality and can be transferred and sent online for absolutely no cost. For those on a limited budget, having someone shoot your wedding with a digital camera might be the best way to save money.

When you do choose to have someone shoot in this manner, make sure that they are dedicated to getting the job done and are not a involved member of the wedding party as it is impossible for the bridesmaid and father of the bride to take great photos when they are actually in the wedding. Also, you should make this a two person team with one coordinating the guests to help make the shooting process to go as smoothly as possible.

I have included a video to help provide tips to taking quality wedding photographs.
