Choosing a wedding photographer -

Choosing your wedding photographer can be a bit of a minefield. There are literally thousands of photographers advertising their services out there.

So how can you find the one that's right for you?

Recommendations - either from friends, family or perhaps even another wedding supplier or hotel who have found a photographer who not only did a professional job, but also who produced stunning images.

• Magazines - Possibly your first port of call after you set the date. You start browsing wedding magazines which provide an excellent point of reference for all your wedding suppliers. Although I would recommend going with a local magazine, bear in mind most photographers will travel. If you see something you like, phone them or look them up on the ...

Internet - the internet is an excellent way to asses a photographers work. Most studios have a few galleries showing off their work. However, a word of caution, not many photographers put a complete wedding on display only their ‘greatest hits'. Which brings us on neatly to

Call a few - Ask for more information on their service. What do they charge? Do they offer packages? Can you view your pictures online? Once you have spoken to a few there may be one or two you will start to warm to, so.....

Meeting with them -Perhaps meet at the wedding venue and ask to see more example of their work. This way you can see full portfolios and asses the quality of their work. It also helps you determine the photographer's personality. Sounds a little harsh but one persons ‘bubbly' persona is another persons ‘annoying git'.

This person is going to be present for a significant part of a very important and personal day - it is essential you have some sort of rapport with them.

The final criterion to mention is budget. Pro's aren't always more expensive than amateurs, however the images they can produce under pressure are often priceless. Your wedding photography isn't an expense - its an investment. After all 10 years from now on your wedding anniversary what will you be looking back on? The cake - unlikely, the dress - maybe, the Groom - hopefully.

The pictures - definitely.
