Order of Wedding Speeches

Wedding speeches are traditionally considered as an integral part of wedding ceremonies. Speeches given by the groom, the best man, father of the bride and maid of honors at the wedding reception are among the major wedding speeches.

Your wedding day is easily one of the most significant days in your life and you would want everything to be perfect o this day and wedding speeches are one of them. It’s very important that you all know the correct order of wedding speeches. You obviously don’t want to start with best man speech and end up with the father of the bride speech. And you don’t want to see the speakers confused about the wedding speech order and not very sure when he or she is scheduled to speak.

The order of wedding speeches have nevertheless become almost like a custom to several as they do not change as much from one family to the other they will be the same. However, they may differ from one family to another but the disparity is not very wide. In the majority of weddings the order will be as follows:

In most cases, in fact almost always, the father of the bride speaks first, then the groom followed by the best man and finally the bridesmaids. In some weddings the father of the bride speech is followed by the groom’s father and finally the best man and the maid of honor. Though not very common but sometimes brides also gives her speech. She could give her bride speech after the best man and before the maid of honor.

But, honestly, you don’t have to follow traditions word for word. If you are asked to speak in a wedding you should always try to find out if there is any tradition to follow and get ready for your wedding speech accordingly. But in most cases there won’t be any confusion as almost every family tends to follow the tradition. However, in some cases young people want to do it differently but even in those cases the experiment is done with the style and the content of the speeches rather than the speaking order.

The groom speech is mostly a formal speech where the groom seems to thank everybody involved in the marriage. The father of the bride speech is generally more sentimental than anything else. The maid of honor speeches are very interesting because it is from a woman about another woman who is very close to her heart. But the best man speeches are the most absorbing of all wedding speeches. They are often very funny and are great entertainers too.

How To Write A Speech  says:

Sounds interesting. I never knew that there was a special order to wedding speeches. I'm from Germany and here it's always different. Sometimes you only have a speech of the father of the groom. Sometimes both fathers and then a friend. But there's definitely no strict order.

The order of wedding speeches, while there are traditions, is not vitally important. What I would say is more important is knowing the order of the speeches beforehand. Normally the speaker following on will start by giving thanks to the previous speaker for his kind toast.

The traditional speech running order prompts much of the structure of the speeches; the best man thanks the groom for his toast to the bridesmaids and then makes a toast to the bride and grooms themselves.
