Spur-of-the-moment entry wins top prize

TOH Siew Wei's wedding photo bagged her the grand prize in The Star and Sa Sa's 'Making Life Beautiful For Your Loved Ones' contest.
"I was really surprised when I found out I won.
"I joined the contest at the spur of the moment," said the businesswoman in a telephone interview from Kuching.
Toh's winning entry depicts the newly-weds in a happy moment where her husband Paul Lau performs a handstand behind her.

Grand prize-winner Toh Siew Wei is represented by her brother Toh Jyh How (centre, in blue shirt) and second prize winner Leong Foong Yee is represented by her husband Law Kok Peng (second from right). First prize-winner is Yeoh Peng Eow (second from left).
It came with the completed slogan, "Making Life Beautiful For Your Loved Ones is the only thing I can do for him."
For this, she won RM5,000 cash plus a RM5,000 voucher and a hamper worth RM2500 courtesy of Sa Sa.
A ceremony was held at Menara Star recently to give out the prizes to the winners. Hong Kong Sa Sa (M) Sdn Bhd vice president Corina Loi said the entries for the contest were very creative.
"There were entries with people doing somersaults and some dressed up as clowns.
"But the most surprising entry was one from a 62-year-old despite the contest being conducted in an electronic format. It just shows how in-tune with technology our senior citizens are," she said.
Loi added people have always celebrated Valentine's Day with their spouses, boyfriends and girlfriends.
The organiser wanted the contestants to show how this special day is celebrated among family members.
The contest was jointly organised by The Star with Sa Sa in conjunction with Valentine's Day.

IPOH: Valentine's Day is a special day for engineer Fu Choong Tern.
He was born on this day 29 years ago and he chose yesterday to marry his sweetheart of three years Karen Lee Chye Yin.
"Feb 14 is already a special date for me. Now, it brings new meaning to the love I have for my wife," he said when met at a mass wedding here at the Ipoh Chinese Chin Woo Athletics Association on Valentine's Day.
He said their romance began when 28-year-old Lee started work as a safety officer at his workplace.
"We rarely had the chance to bump into each other during working hours but thanks to our company outdoor activities, we managed to meet often and become friends," he said.
"Gradually, we began going out and got together as an item," he added.
Describing her Valentine man as "romantic and cool" who likes to surprise her on her birthdays, Lee said:
"He is also a caring and loving guy."
She added that after three years of being together, they decided it was the right time to tie the knot.
Getting married on Valentine's Day is a different story for 24-year-olds Fung Kok Hing and Liew Lee Hui. Both are born in the Year of the Rat.
Fung, a therapist, said both of them were neighbours, and had been dating for five years before deciding to get hitched.
"We felt that it was the right time. Moreover it is the Year of the Rat and getting married on Valentine's Day makes it a more special year for us," said Fung.
"It is also easier for me to remember our wedding anniversary in the future," he quipped.

Lovebirds tie the knot

GOH Hong Ghee made a promise 11 years ago to his high school sweetheart that he will marry her when he turns 32.
Yesterday, Goh fulfilled his promise, tying the knot with Ooi Su Ei, 29, on a special day - Valentine's Day.
Goh, an accountant, and Ooi, an account administrator, joined 34 others at a mass wedding at the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society, Penang, yesterday.

Also hitched on the same day and place were operations manager Lim Siang Cherng, 29 and print circuit board tooling designer Tan Chin Hooi, 28, who were classmates from Year Three to Year Six.
Romantic moment: Lim placing a wedding ring on the finger of Tan.
Lim said he had liked Tan since the first day he saw her but it was only a year after a chance meeting during a class reunion in 2005 that they developed a romantic relationship.
"We chose to marry on Valentine's Day because it was a romantic day to marry," Lim said.
Tan said she would never forget how Lim proposed to her on Dec 31.
"He got down on his knees and proposed at a shopping complex when I found a ring in the ice-cream that I was eating," she said.
Also married were kindergarten classmates, businessman Ivan Leong, 26, and secretary Sandy Boon, 26.
Leong placing a ring on Boon's finger at the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society on Valentine's Day.
It is easy to remember our wedding anniversary date and save money with a two-in-one celebration," Leong said as he laughed.
Joining 22 other couples at a mass wedding at the Penang Chinese Town Hall were hotel department manager Bruce Cheah, 27, and casino bartender Michelle Chew, 25, who had returned from Melbourne in Australia for the special occasion.
Arch of happiness: Couples entering the Penang Chinese Town Hall for the mass wedding.
Cheah said they both love Penang, the food and wanted to spend their special day to be with family members.
"We courted for more than four years and I followed him to Melbourne where he studied before getting a job there," Chew said.
She said marrying on Valentine's Day was special and believed that it was a blessing for a lasting marriage.
Ad exec stuns girlfriend with RM54,000 marriage proposal
By CHOONG MEK ZHIN
PETALING JAYA: For this Valentine's Day, businesswoman Kelly Tan E Li got an unexpected marriage proposal.
It was "wrapped" in a RM14,000 diamond ring and a huge billboard advertisement in which her boyfriend publicly declared his intentions
Billboard proposal: Ad man David Tan came up with a unique marriage proposal. He spent RM40,000 on a billboard and RM14,000 on a diamond ring to pop the questio
"This is the biggest surprise of my life. And, the whole thing started as a very normal Wednesday. We went out for dinner and my boyfriend David Tan insisted on sending me home.
"The date ended very late, close to midnight. We got talking in the car and as we drove along the LDP in Kelana Jaya, he got excited and asked me to look at an "interesting" billboard by the side of the road," said Kelly, 24.
As David was working in an advertising firm, Kelly assumed he wanted to show her some fancy new advertisements.
"I looked and was stunned. David's picture was on the board! And beside his picture, were the magic words 'Kelly Tan E Li, will you marry me?'
"I was so shocked and could not speak for about 10 minutes. He finally smiled when I told him 'yes'," said Kelly.
And the RM40,000 billboard was not the only surprise.
Immediately after Kelly said yes, David pulled out a box and inside, was a sparkling diamond ring.
"I cannot ask for a more memorable Valentine's Day. I really want to thank David for this unique proposal," said Kelly, a nail salon owner in Bangsar.
David, 26, said he had planned this surprise for some time. He only wanted the best for Kelly.
The accounts executive said he deliberately proposed on Valentine's Day so that they could remember this day with fondness in the future.
"I work in an advertising company and am always thinking out of the box to come up with new concepts and ideas. I wanted my marriage proposal to be unique," said David.
He added that luck was definitely on his side for him to be able to book one of the billboards along the LDP, which were highly in demand.
"The fact that I managed to book one especially on Valentine's Day is so lucky. Hopefully, our marriage will be equally amazing," said David.
The couple met at a friend's house during Chinese New Year three years ago and started dating six months later.
David has already started planning for the wedding.
"It should be held sometime at the end of this year or early next year.
"I cannot wait to marry Kelly. She is an amazing woman and she deserves all the attention I shower on her," he said.
08.08.08: A Special Day Occassion
AUGUST 8 will forever be etched in Gok Chin Cheong's memory - it was the day he turned 23 and also the day he got registered to Lee Chai Yin, 24.
The couple decided to tie the knot after a whirlwind four-month courtship and a proposal that included 99 flowers and a group of close friends during a karaoke session.
"We were both schoolmates at SJK (C) Taman Rashna but lost contact when we moved on to diffirent secondary schools," Chai Yin said.
"We met again when we both played badminton at a club, but only got together after a group trip to Tioman in April this year.
"It was my husband's idea to get married today to mark the two special occasions and we plan to have our wedding ceremony on 09.09.09."
Poignant memories: Some of the 238 couples who received their marriage certificates during the mass ceremony.
The couple later headed to KL for a celebratory lunch and returned to Klang for a karaoke session where the bride had a surprise lined up for her groom.
Gok and Chai Yin were among the 238 couples who tied the knot at the Hokkien Association Hall in Klang during a mass registration ceremony held to mark 08.08.08.
Hokkien Association treasurer and event adviser Lim Sze Teck said this was the first time they had a mass registration ceremony together with a three-day bridal fair.
"The Three 8s Wedding Fair offers some convenience for the couples as the exhibitors include wedding and photography studios, restaurants and more.
"The couples can make their enquiries and bookings under one roof instead of having to hunt around.
Momentous occasion: Beverly and Liong were initially nervous, but recovered in time to receive their marriage certificates.
"The event is also unique because we invited prominent figures from the Klang community, who are also the association's board members, to present the marriage certificates to the couples," Lim said, adding that the couples had signed their certificates before the day's mass registration and swearing ceremony.
"We're expecting a much bigger crowd next year when we host the 09.09.09 mass wedding, and we've already had couples registering their names.
"The number 999 holds more significance for the Hokkien clan as it means longevity, hence it signifies a long-lasting marriage and happiness," he said.
Chan Kai Ong and Liong Yin Yee, both 34, chose to stand out by donning traditional Chinese outfits for the ceremony, while Koay Say Tat and Lai Shu Fong, both in their 30s, wore outfits in matching shades of pink - the bride's favourite colour.
"It was my mother who suggested that we wear traditional outfits to mark this day, which is a very ‘ong' (lucky) day for the Chinese," Liong said.
"We only made the decision the night before but we managed to borrow my mum's cheongsam and a friend's traditional suit in time for today."
She said the occasion was made even more special as it coincided with the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
Double celebration: Birthday boy Gok (right) and Chai Yin checking out some of the booths at the fair.
For Christine Ng, 29, and Tan Kok Hwa, 41, the age gap between them is not an issue as they are comfortable and care for each other.
"Coincidentally, two of my friends are are also getting married today," said Ng.
Lee Lay Bee, 30, and Wong Wei Chong, 32, attributed lady luck to them being the first couple to receive their marriage certificates.
"We wanted to register our marriage at the Hokkien Association last year, but I was busy then," Lay Bee said.
"The association's registrar later suggested that we get married today, and we're very happy that we did."
Meanwhile, Beverly Lee, 28, and Melvin Liong, 25, were overcome with nervousness earlier in the day, but managed to recover in time to receive their certificates.
"We like each other for our unique qualities but we both enjoy teasing each other, so I think we'll never get bored growing old together," Beverly smiled.
