AAliyah gets the Swine Flu

I have been writing about the Swine H1N1 Flu for weeks now, I never realized the impact, until it hit home.

Aaliyah who is three years old was tested and it was positive for the H1N1 Swine Flu. This is her second day on the Tamiflu regimen.

I originally took Aaliyah t othe Doctor on Tuesday for a fever, runny nose and cough. Her Pediatrician asked what I was giving her at home. I told him Triaminic Decongestant and Tylenol. He said that was fine to keep doing what I was doing at home. WRONG.

The Doctor was reluctant to do the test because Aaliyah has always been healthy and has only been on Antibiotics once since she was born. They had began testing every child then their supplies were getting low so they only tested those with high fevers. I guess I shouldn't have given her Tylenol, huh?

I took her back to the Doctor yesterday with a high fever and a non productive cough, that is when they did the test.

We are quarantined for 5 days, after she finishes her Tamiflu.  There are moments she seems to feel ok then she just lays her head down and starts to cry.  There is no sleep around here, I stay up and watch her.

The problem with the H1N1 in small children is that they can easily develop pneumonia.   Making sure they have lots and lots of fluids is very important.  They can also easily become dehydrated which leads to hospitalization.  Pedialyte is a good source of fluids, it replaces eclectrolyes due to high fever.

She is to return to the Doctor tomorrow to check her lungs to make sure pnemonia is not developing.

If you child has any flu like symptoms take them to the Doctor immediately and be persistent is they don't think the test is necessary,  Aaliyah is proof that healthy children can get the Swine Flu as well.

What the CDC is not telling you

I asked the Pediatrician if Aaliyah's case would be reported to the CDC and was told that they are having a difficult time keeping up with the numbers so the only cases being reported to the CDC or thee WHO are those who are hospitalized in ICU or get pnemunia, which would lead to hospitalization.  They are even reluctant to tell you that it is H1N1, unless you ask.  Ask questions, they are not going to give you information freely.  I find now that all of the Swine Flu reports I have done are not correct, the number is probably tripled what is being released.  If your child suffers at all from a fever and cough, take them and demand the test, the Tamiflu supply is getting low in North Carolina and it is widespread all over the Southern East Coast.  For those of you taking care of a sick child, wash your hands frequently,

Probably the most talked about topic of the first semester of the 2009-10 school year -- other than state budgets -- was H1N1. Most of the general public probably doesn't know what those letters and numbers mean.

Everyone is talking about flu prevention. But what if you're among the unfortunate few who have come down with the nasty bug?

I'm sorry to hear about Aaliyah, Dori. I really hope that she recovers quickly. It really does makes sense that the numbers/reports have been skewed, to prevent panic among the masses. What irony!

I wish you all the best with everything :)

Hey you,

So that's what you've been busy with, eh? Well, hopefully you are through the worst of it by the time you read this. Kids are strong so don't stress too much. I am honestly a big believer in the human body's recuperative powers. Anyway, get off of here and go take care of your kid, okay? Hope she pulls out of it before you even READ this!

Thanks Dohn, I am sure she will, she is napping now so I can have some free time.

WSP, know she is getting the best care available. Nanna's on duty, no problem. She will pull out of it, she is tough.

You, your daughter, and your family are in my prayers. What's so amazing is, if everyone did their part and applied common sense methods like washing their hands, coughing and sneezing in the crook of their arms, and staying away from others to prevent them from getting sick, the spread would no doubt be far less. It's good that you are becoming a health advocate for your daughter. It's scary that those in the health profession are so reluctant to inform us as to what is going on - especially when it comes down to our children. Just hang in there and I'm positive your little one will be back on her feet in no time. Your a good mommy, some parents would have still tried to send their kids to school or daycare - adding to the spread of this illness. Poor baby! Give her lots of hugs and chicken soup.

Hope Aliyah gets better. The swine flu was pretty bad here in Australia but things have gotten better as they would at your neck of the woods. Take care and get well soon to the little one.

Thanks Pollyanna, I was doing a hub a week about the swine flu and it's statistics until I found out that the numbers were off. When I took Aaliyah to the doctor, I asked if it would be reported to the CDC and he said only if she is hospitalized. She was the 56th child that tested positive that DAY, and none were reported so the numbers are actually higher that what is relaeased. Thanks for stopping by,

dori
