If you're on the hunt for that perfect weight loss diet, chances are you'll run across some very bad diets. Not to say the author may not have had good intensions with them, just that they are set up very wrong and may even pose a threat to your health.

By being aware of which types of diets you should avoid regardless of how good they sound, you increase the chances you'll find a diet that does work and one that you can finally see the fat loss success you've been looking for with.

Here are the main diets you need to be on the lookout for.

Diets That Eliminate Food Groups

Cut out dairy? Remove all vegetables? Limit all carbs to that of celery?

Sound like a good plan? I think not. The problem with limiting whole food groups is not only are you really cutting down on food choices, but you're also shorting yourself in nutrients.

True, you can get by without eating milk as proved by strict vegetarians every single day, but there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to omit vegetables from your diet.

I don't care what the author says, these are low in calories, full of nutrients, and if anything will only help with fat loss the more you eat.

Sure, peas, corn, and carrots are higher in calories and may want to be limited, but leafy and other green vegetables should be consumed freely on whatever diet you happen to be on.

Single Food Diets

Next up we have those popular single food diets.

The Cabbage Soup Diet.

The Grapefruit Diet.

The Peanut Butter Diet.

All are promising great results if you really focus on eating this one single food. Again, not only are you going to be lacking nutrients, but you're also going to likely get very bored and find yourself going off them anyway.

What good will that single food do you when you're so sick of it, you can hardly look at it?

Avoid these diets at all costs.

Very Low Calorie Diets

For fast weight loss, very low calorie diets (900 calories or fewer) seem to be all the rage. Again though, you really have to look at trade-offs.

Yes you will likely lose weight, but keep in mind this weight loss will be predominately water weight loss and stored muscle glycogen.

And guess what? As soon as you end that silly diet, those things will just come right back and you'll be at stage one all over again.

Sure, they may get you looking slightly thinner for a special occasion, but if it damages your metabolism and causes you to gain weight once you come off of it, was it really worth it?

Moderate dieting is the key to fat loss that lasts. Plus, it's going to keep you feeling the healthiest, which will only make you want to stick with the diet and therefore lose more weigh t in the long run.

Detox Diets

Finally, the last type of diet that you shouldn't consider for the longer term is a detox diet.

Some will state that these are great for cleaning out the system and helping your body function optimally again.

Some can be good if done over the course of a couple days. But anything more than that and I wouldn't stick with them.

Not only do you really run the risk of losing muscle mass (which takes a very long time to rebuild), but you also could put yourself at risk for diseases due to vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

If your doctor prescribes you some type of detox diet that's one thing, but going on one for more than a week yourself is something that I just simply would not recommend when weight loss is the primary motivational factor.

So, be sure you are not falling for one of these fat loss diet traps. Going the more traditional route - a slightly lowered calorie intake coupled with a good, balanced exercise plan is really going to be the way to get optimal results.
