Weight Loss May Have a Huge Price Sometimes
60Why Lose Weight?
I've been as lucky as to be thin during my whole life. This makes it very difficult for me to understand people who would periclitate their health and well-being for weight loss, following crazy diets such as the grapefruit diet, or the cabbage soup diet, or some other extremely restrictive programs, only to lose a few extra pounds.
I think it's the fault of our nowadays society, which encourages being thin as a beauty standard, especially for women. Have you ever looked and those fashion models? They all seem to be starving, otherwise there cannot be any explanation for those prominent bones (which in my opinion are far from expressing beauty).
There is no wonder, in such circumstances, that even young girls have a strong wish of being skinny, many times with the price of their health. How to explain a teenager, who's suffering day after day because of being called names by her colleagues because she's a bit overweight, that beauty does not necessarily reside in the number of puonds somebody has, but rather is a way of being and a style of dressing ansd behaving, which can make people turn their heads when you pass by. Of course she'll be looking for any weight loss tips she may find, instead of trying some healthy products which would help her lose weight naturally..
Do you remember Rembrandt? The feminine beauty model of his time was fat. Those semi-naked girls he painted were the beauty ideal for that century.
Or look at ancient Greek statues: Venus of Milo didn't have a flat stomach and her butt was far from being small. Yes, she was the beauty standard for ancient Greeks. Why today's girls need to starve in order to be considered beautiful and to gain respect from their community?
Of course, these are only my thoughts, but it feels good for me to write them here, because my eldest daughter is one of these strive-to-be-slim children of the modern age, who damages herself in hundreds of useless weight loss diets, followed by intervals of over-eating, thus not managing to look as she wants, despite the fact that her health is already questionable. And let's not forget that the one true weight loss diet which works for everybody hasn't been invented yet, and it probably never will, becasue each human being is unique.
Dangers of fad diets
Fad diets are those weight loss diets which haven't been proved in a scientific manner that they work as they are supposed to. Most doctors and nutrition specialists believe they are harmful to the health, and that they may result in severe metabolic disorders, which many times are not reversible. However, there are people, especially the older generations who tell the world how they lost weight with fad diets.
I know very few people who lost weight and haven't gained it back, and all of them followed special diets, tailored for them by nutritionists. I believe in a balanced regime, with proteins, carbohydrates, glucides, with all nutrients which support life, mixed together in such a way that the person gets the number of calories which are required to support life, every day.
If we only think at the grapefruit diet: did you know that grapefruits, like all citrics, are highly acid and they can harm the stomach mucosa, provoking gastritis or even ulcer? Or that grapefruits are proved to interact with drugs, like felodipine, thus putting cardiac diseases sufferers in trouble? Or if we think that grapefruit consumption decreases the insulin levels in the body, diabetics could have a hard time and even get into coma if their insulin levels drop suddenly.
I believe in activity: sports, fitness, exercise, long walks in the nature, can all contribute to developing a harmonious body, tone stomach and get the flat abs which give an elegant look even to chubby persons. This may not be ther easy weight loss method we all sought after, but it wouldsurely be the healthiest.

You are welcome, I'm glad I was able to help you stay away of the dangers of fast weight loss with fad diets.
This is a great hub that you have created, it was carefully thought out and provides adequate facts. It is important to note that nearly everyone that tries one of these silly and monotonous fad diets (Atkins, South Beach, Zone Diet, etc) does in fact gain all the weight back. They simply attack the problem of losing weight at different angle. It is important to know <a target="_new" href="http://hubpages.com/hub/What-Are-The-Risks-of-Fad- are the risk of fad diets?</a>
Silver, dude I don't see how you can call Atkins a monotonous fad diet. That there diet is one of the best researched weight lost programs in the history of mankind. You're just regurgitating the same old "fad diet" vampire myths without doing any research of your own.
I gotta say, with regard to this hub here, I really like thinking about Rembrandt and the way those sexy old nudes were all painted. Those chicks looked healthy, right?
Hey, Doug, I see you're one of the few young people who still appreciate Rembrandt's beauties! Luckily, those ladies probably had no clue about fad diets or other weight loss programs and plans, otherwise painters would have been in trouble of not finding models.
Very informative hub. Weight loss is important when you're tipping the scales more than you should.
I think that faddy diets should be banned because they are giving people wrong advice which will affect their overall health. Weight loss should be a long-term goal which is done in a healthy manner.
It's scary how people want to be so skinny. I'm not talking about slim but I mean, REALLY skinny where they are little more that skin and bone. It doesn't help that magazines are fully of skinny celebrities and fast weight loss diets.

How hard it is to lose 50 pounds
When a reader asked me how hard would it be to lose 50 ponuds, that made me smile and determined me to add a bit of text to this page, here, because it fits very well into the topic.
When you want to lose 50 pounds, you are probably heavily overweight, most surely obese. This means that you should by no means attempt to follow any advice you read on the internet or you get from your friends and colleagues. Your internal organs arte at risk, your heart is forced to pump so much blood every minute, in order to support all that additional weight of yours. You can't just stop eating or start exercising like crazy, hoping that you'll get rid of 50 or 40 pounds with no consequences concerning your heath.
I stronlgy encourage you to consult your doctor before attempting any diet or weight loss program. Losing that much weight is possible, I've seen people that were successful, but they were guided by their personal nutritionist and not by hazard and rumours.
