Weight loss without diet, you must think that is a joke, right? Well, it is not. As a working mother of three, that is how I lost weight because when you’re a mum and there are three hungry mouths to feed, you just cannot do without food – food in the fridge, food on counters and food everywhere!

For most people, weight loss is hard because they starve themselves when they are on a ‘diet’. All of a sudden, they switch to painfully small portions of boring foods. No one can sustain a dry, unexciting diet of greens and lettuce for too long. And we certainly cannot remain too hungry for too long. It is not the natural state of things. You see, restrictive diets are self-destructive.

So, I realized that the secret is to make small changes that add up to large calorie cuts over a period of time.

Before you begin, let me warn you: It will be a little slow going. But, over a period of time, you will be losing impressive amounts of excess flab. More importantly, you will be paving the way for a long lasting behavioral change that makes it easy for you to stick to your new weight in the future.

So, here are some hot tips to effective weight loss sans painful hunger.

Tip #1: Cut out the extras.

If you enjoy a small bowl of full fat ice cream after dinner every night, chucking it will help you cut several calories every day. Identify such avoidable extras that you are eating simply to pacify your palate. Cut them out or reduce them drastically; or look for low-cal alternatives.

Tip #2: If it ain’t brown, put it down.

Kill your love affair with white bread, white flour and white rice. White makes you want to bite (There is a physiological reason for that, but it is too complicated for this space). Brown, whole-grain food is high in fiber, so it stays in your stomach longer making you feel fuller for extended periods of time. Smart food choices make a lot of difference.

Tip #3: Cut portions.

Portion sizes at homes and restaurants have increased, so have food related items like food packets, fridges, freezers and dinner plates. As a society, we are eating much more than ever before. You can make a big difference simply by eating a little less. Eat 5% less than you usually do. Weight loss will be 50% faster than you expect!

Tip #4: Avoid eating after sundown.

Keep your last meal of the day as close to sundown as possible. Zip your mouth tightly after dinner. Thou shalt not eat after dinner!

Tip #5: Drink sensibly.

Most people only count calories when they eat. What they drink goes unaccounted. Avoid carbonated drinks, juice and alcohol. These are full of hidden calories. Instead, drink plenty of water.
