There is more to a bra than meets the eye

Just for a change of pace and a bit of fun, I thought I would write on a topic that is quite alien to my mainstream writing. I found a weird story from country town Cootamundra, NSW, Australia. And that started this crazy escapade.

ABC North Coast NSW on 20th August 2005, reported that "Ballina Council in northern NSW has written to the Alstonville/Wollongbar branch of Quota International requesting them to remove around two thousand bras strung along a barbed wire fence fronting the Bruxner Highway.

The display, entitled 'Bras on the Bruxner', was erected to promote the 'Bold n Bra-ssy' competition, a fundraising event for a local cancer survivors support group, Rainbow Dragons Abreast."

YourHub.com on 9th September, 2007, reported that "Bra Art", at Waterways Gallery in Florida, would be donated to Pink Tie Friends. And yes, it was all to raise breast cancer awareness.

The Morning Call reported a strange event in Fairfield, Connecticut. It involved a store called "Victoria's Secret". Early in October, 2007, 100 pink bras, valued at about $4,000 were stolen.

The Cootamundra Herald, on 1st November, 2007 reported that a pepper tree, in front of the local post office, was adorned with pink bras. The display was legitimate, in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Victoria's Secret story seems to sit awkwardly. But look at the dates. Definitely some fuel for poetic musings.

Dawns, Moonbeams, Midnights and Lace

Position! Position! Position!

Secret art

Wired and lacey

Framed in subtle skins

Gently travelling blindly

Trusting within

Brazen art

Black and artsy

Bouyed by brassy chords

Boldly travelling loudly

Shouting from within

Fragile art

Icy art

Flimsy

Light

Éclair art

Art of fragrant blossoms

Weeping in the rain

Precious art

Landscape art

Heavenly

Desirable art

But separate the skins

From the wonderland

The essence

And the brazen

The fragile

The mystery

The art

Melts

P.S. And then there is the amazing Bra Ball Story. The story began in 2000 when a San Francisco artist wanted a home for his large bra collection. Artist Emily Duffy had an artistic solution. A Bra Ball sculpture! It has 18,025 bras, is 5 feet high and weighs about 1,800 pounds. It is now in the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. Check it out!

I guess it's just as good to ball up the bras as it is to burn them...

It's good to get a surprise smile sometimes Zsuzsy! I hope many enjoy! Too often, certain elements of our social fabric are given a rather stereotypical profile. Hopefully, this hub might "wobble" some of those images.

aura, I think she is concerned (wisely) re: her email addy in there.  deny the comment for her as a courtesy and let her repost her thoughts without her addy tagged onto it.

Thanks lounn! I have denied it! Should I delete too?

you might jot her an e through "contact Hubber" to explain and ask for advice. that is what I might do. it goes to her email and she can let you know her preference.

for all I know she meant something different, but when I looked that was my first thought on her concern - the addy. hopefully she will return and make new comments in her safer Hub name. :)

the "denied" ones don't show to other readers even when not deleted, so no worries. if that was it, she's covered. :)

As long as all is well! I have just a couple more weeks of school holidays, then I will be "disappearing" a little too! Hence the flood of writing at the moment from me on my blog, poetry website and here! They're all open at once and I jump from one to the other. I am an addict! LOL!

P.S. If you would prefer these last few comments to be erased I will do so. Just let me know!

Be careful what you wish for ... in terms of weird bras stories... I just paid for something as a restuarant called the mountain view brassiere and when the credit card bill came it said Mountian View Bras... nudge nudge wink wink.... somebody somewhere has a zany sense of humour...

great stuff.. thanks Drax
