Ask Susan Peters - Are Wellness Healthy Pet Foods?

Wellness has done a good job of making healthy pet foods. Healthy pet foods do not include needless grains and other pet health damaging ingredients. Natural Flavor. I always like the way pet food companies hide the use of manure in the ingredients. Natural flavor is usually made from the manure of the animal the pet food company wants the pet food to taste like. I sure hope this is not the case with Wellness pet foods.

I do not like the use of Animal Fats. Many pet food producers use chicken fat and other fats to entice a pet to eat ingredients the pet would normally not eat.

Potatoes. Cheap filler.

Pet food producers are using ingredients unfit for human consumption which are killing our pets. The ingredients in pet food must be changed!

The use of Corn, Wheat, and Soy are causing such awful conditions in pets including:

  • Dry and itchy skin
  • Fever
  • Ear aches
  • Ear infections
  • Hot Spots on the skin
  • Bad breath
  • Dental disease
  • Hair loss
  • Sore feet
  • Abnormal nail growth
  • Bloat
  • Weight gain
  • Tumors
  • Moles and warts
  • Seizures
  • Blindness
  • Deafness
  • Heart conditions
  • Kidney conditions
  • Liver conditions
  • Early pet death

These companies need to be held accountable for the injuries to our pets and our best friends early deaths!

i was feeding my cat Origen and Innova Evo and switched to Wellness Core as i really liked the high protein contect and the ingredients seemed good. After a week he was losing hair in MATS, after 2 weeks he was covered in red scabs. The vet said it was likely an allergic reaction to the food. I switched him back to origen and within 3 days the red scabs started going away. It made me wonder what is really in the ingredients and if something is mislabelled or not mentioned as my 8 year old cat has never had that before and i often switch foods.

Johanne,

I would say the reason for your cat's reaction is the fermentation products used to make this product. Fermentation products are a result of making beer and/or wine. I would say you were very wise to notice your cat's reaction to this food and change foods. Kiss your vet - sounds like he/she really cares about your pet.

I have purchased this bag of food at $25.00. I wish I had read this but wonder if the reaction the food is limited. I am trying to find the all star dry food product.

Has anyone else had problems with this dry cat food?

Wellness Core gave my cat diarrhea. His GI health returned to normal when he went back to Evo.

We've been feeding Wellness Core to our 9 months old German Shepherd for some time. All was well until just recently when we opened a new bag, exp. date Feb 2010. He had explosive, watery diarrhea. We fed him rice with boiled hamburger until his gut settled, then re-introduced the Wellness Core and he's back with the diarrhea.

Obviously, we're wondering if there's been a change in formulation. Has anyone a similar recent experience with Wellnes Core dog food?

In terms of the "natural flavour", in the case of Core Wellness Dry Cat Food, it is not manure. If you check out their dictionary of ingredients, it is defined as follows:

Natural Chicken Flavor Natural Chicken Flavor is a powder or liquid made by taking clean animal tissue (usually liver) and breaking it down using enzymes. Natural flavor is used for its ability to improve the taste of dry foods. It is sprayed on the exterior of dry food.

I emailed Core Wellness to double check about the 'natural flavour' and this is the response I got:

Natural Chicken Flavor is a powder or liquid made by taking clean animal tissue (usually liver) and breaking it down using enzymes. Natural flavor is used for its ability to improve the taste of dry foods. It is sprayed on the exterior of dry food. It is not made out of manure, we only use human grade ingredients.

I have been feeding my dogs Wellness Core dry food and I have also noticed loose stools? And this is several different bags/flavors. I thought at first it was from the switch in brands but it's been long enough now I think.

Just wanted to add our own experience - we switched to Core (both wet and dry) and it's had a dramatic positive effect on all of our cats (previously went through several premium wet and dry foods, but nothing with the high meat/protein content) - contrary to prior posters, our cats all became more regular (no vomiting/diahrrea as they occasionally had on other food), their coats are sleeker, they have more energy, and our one cat that was getting pretty chubby has slimmed down. I'd recommend Core 100% (after 4 months).
