Dog Food Recall

In March of 2007 there was a massive dog food recall. Menu Foods was found to have melamine in its dog foods. Melamine is used as an industrial binding agent, is also used in plastics, flame retardant and as a fertilizer. It is not labeled for consumption for animals or humans.

When melamine is combined with cyanuric acid (or a melamine- related compound) it forms crystals in the kidneys and urine. Kidney failure is what caused the deaths in all the dogs and cats.

I Wouldn't Feed My Baby Fillers, Would You?

Pet Food Recall: China Is The Culprit!

The wheat-gluten and rice-gluten that contained the melamine was imported from China. Specifically 2 Chinese Corporations. They used the melamine as a filler to increase the protein in the glutens.

Not only should you be concerned about the glutens, but you should be concerned about what else may be in the food. China is not a clean country. I don't know if any of you have been there lately. My husband has been twice in the last 3 years. It is deplorable. He has been to Hangzhou, and the people who live there, are in squalor. They usually don't have any running water, let alone a working lavatory. They use a hole in the floor. Animals run rampant in the streets, and they usually eat them. Yep, just pick them up off the street and cook them. Disgusting isn't it?

So do you want to take a wild guess as to what may be in your pets food?

You wouldn't want to take the chance and eat this food would you? Why do you want to feed it to your dog?

Pet food recalls are becoming more and more commonplace. We have been thinking of making the food ourselves. I knew someone that bought a bag of frozen chicken breasts from BJ's or Costco, rice, and carrots and peas and cooked it together. She formed small burger sized patties. wrapped each one and froze them. She gave one to her dog at each meal. She swore it was no more expensive than commercial dog food.

Haha I just played the video and my pup woke up and started twisting her head looking at the computer. How cute. I wouldn't necessarily rule out all Chinese pet products, but it's something to consider.
