Wellness Dog Food Review

There is no corn listed in this product. I have really enjoyed testing this dog food. There should be more products available for us like this one. I had to drive nearly two hours from my remote town to get a bag of this great product. Of course, I could have ordered on-line and saved the drive, but I wanted to check out the other great stuff they had. Kathy, you suggested a great product and I love the address on this one. http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com/

The Wellness people also make cat food and treats for your pets.

**If price and packaging were not part of the testing this would have easily be a 10+ product. Pricing of a product isn't a good reflection on the actual cost of feeding a product. Pets don't require as large of a feeding of a quality product such as this

Do you have another dog or cat food you would like to have tested? Please submit a comment and I'll check it out.Susan Peters

Readers,

I wrote to the Old Mother Hubbard company asking about where their products were packaged. I've decided to share the emails with you:

Dear Susan,

Thank you for taking the time to write about Wellness products.

All of our foods are manufactured in the United States and Canada.

Our manufacturing partner information is proprietery. However we would like to let you know that our manufacturing partners make our recipes according to our quality and ingredient standards.

We have strict procedures in place at ALL of our manufacturing facilities to clean between each run of food that is produced. We also inspect the plant regularly to audit ALL their procedures. Since we take our quality very seriously we go above and beyond what is expected in the industry. We are happy to tell you that we require our facilities to pass an audit by Cook & Thurber, a HUMAN FOOD auditing firm. They have a great website that explains what they do and their strict requirements. They can be found at http://www.nsf.org/business/NSF_cook_and_thurber/index.asp?program=NSFCooThu

Thanks again for contacting us.

Heather,

Thanks for the reply and the information about your high standards of production. I did not realize you have so many producers. I do find myself concerned about cross-contamination, I would be interested in what other products these producers package.

I must admit this is a big surprise to me to learn your company doesn't care to share any information about the packaging. If you have any addional information, please share.

Thanks,

I would like you to test the Nutro brand dog food-all formulas, but especially the Ultra formula, and tell me what you think on this brand of food. I personally think it's a very good food.

Also, how about California Natural Lamc & Rice formula-small bites and puppy food to. Could you test this brand as well.

Thank you.

Thanks for the "atta girl". I took a look at your site you linked in the above comment. Pretty interesting reading. I have taken my own advice which I give on pet food and applied the knowledge to my own health. Guess what... based on simple information, like the information you have offered, I've lost 75 pounds without effort.

Readers, take a look at Joe's link.

I currently feed my dog Wellness dog food and have found it to be the best around, or at least the best that I could find. I also find that when I give her wet food and dry food she goes for the wet food a lot more and leaves a lot of the dry food over. I have started just feeding her the dry food. Is this bad that she only eats dry food now or do you feel that she should have both wet and dry. I see that you like the Wellness brand food. However, in your opinion what do you think is the best dog food out there. I would like to give my animal the best she can get no matter what the cost. Right now she is eating the wellness and to be honest I think she is eating better/healthier than I am. I wonder if you could help me with the wet vs. dry question and what you feel is the best their is out there. Thanks for your help. Josh you can email me at LesPaulST1@aol.com if you get a chance. Thanks once again. Josh.

Hi Susan.

Your website is an absolute guide to go by. I love it! Thanks for taking the time to test out all these products and giving your opinion on them.

I've raised gsds all my life and now am raising a toy maltese. She has allergies and is driving me crazy to find a well-balanced diet for her. I started her off on nature's best from science diet. Then I transitioned her to Life's Abundance. And now I am thinking about transitioning her diet to Canidae All stages dry because she won't eat life's abundance. I've also heard that wellness is also great for small dogs.

I'm trying to decide between Life's Abundance, Wellness, and Canidae. Please help me pick. Price is not an issue because I only want the best for this friend who will be part of the family for a good 10-15 years. Help!

Gina and CJ,

Canidae has tested positive for acetaminophen in tests done by Expertox.

Life's Abundance and Wellness both use by-products of beer and wine making. These by-products can be very dangerous for pets.

I guess my vote would be Orijen Acana which is not a perfect food for pets but scores much better than any of the three we have looked at.

So are you saying that orijen acana is the best food that i can feed my maltese?

Gina,

I enjoyed my vacation but I think I'm paying for it now! LOL

I don't have a favorite dog food to suggest but I have to say that Orijen is looking better than most. I think the best dog food you can feed your Maltese is what you could make at home but home cooking isn't always an option.

Susan

Gina  says:

Haha. I totally understand what you mean about the vacation.

I managed to find a local Orijen distributor and will be starting my baby on that right away. Transitioning it from the old food into the new one of course.

However, Orijen does not carry any wet food. Would you recommend a brand for me because my dog takes Missing Link and Angel Eyes and won't take it if I don't mix it with some wet food. What brand would you recommend for wet food?

Thanks again Susan.

Dear Susan,

What is your opinion ofthe new dog food by Ceasar Millan. It is called Dog Whisperer and is sold at Petco?

Thanks so much for the information. I will probably switch to Orijen unless you think that the Ceasar Millan food is just as good or better.

At the pet store the other day the person there told me the best thing was the Eagle Brand Holistic Select for small breeds, what is our opinion of it. I know it has some fillers.

thanks again.

C.J.,

Looks like the money for putting his name and picture on a bag of beer/wine by-products is what the Whisperer heard when he agreed to make this bag of junk. I will write a full review soon.

The Eagle Pack Small Breeds food is only slightly better than the Whisperer's food. Both are bags of beer/wine by-products. Full review coming soon...

Hello,I was just reading up on some of your reviews of pet foods and such and I was wondering if you have any advice or an opinion to help me decide between two dog foods, Wellness and Life's Abundance. I, as do you it seems, am concerned about the Natural Flavor present in many foods, both human and pet. I was interested to read that it can come from manure and thought you should know that it can also come from corn. I e-mailed wellness asking about the presence of Natural Flavor in their dog foods and this is the response I received. Dear Lydia: Thank you for taking the time to write about Wellness products. Wellness does not contain any wheat, corn or soy. Natural Chicken Flavor is a powder or liquid made by taking clean animal tissue (usually liver) and breaking it down using enzymes. Natural flavor is used for its ability to improve the taste of dry foods. It is sprayed on the exterior of dry food. Thanks again for contacting us. Lydia,

Do you have any idea where you learned that natural flavor could come fom corn? This is the first time I've heard of that but I was surprised to learn that lecithin is usually in soy form. Many grain free recipes contain lecithin. I'm glad Wellness wrote back to you many times the companys won't respond.

I'll take a look at the two pet foods to see which looks better. I don't care for the Wellness Core.

Lydia,

Wellness and Life's Abundance look to be very close to being the same product. If I would need a deciding factor it would be that Wellness has products made by Menu Foods.

That said, I would go with the Life's Abundance.

Hi Susan,

Thanks so much for helping me decide, although it seems you don't think to highly of either of these two brands so what brand would you recommend I look into? I actually heard about the abundance of corn being in nearly everything from Michael Pollan, the author of The Omnivore's Dilemma and The Botany of Desire. Although I don't care for his writing style it was very informative (at times). I also believe that Life's Abundance canned food, at least the cat canned foot, is produced by Menu; although the facility is not either of the ones that had any recalls. This is a little bit suspect to me since even though I won't be feeding canned wet food, I don't know where their dry food is produced.

Lydia,

I don't know where to tell you to turn for a healthy pet food.  All of these companies have taken a nose dive since the recalls of 2007.  All of the "new" products on the market include fermintation products, by-products of beer and wine production (the ones I've been reviewing).

In my reviews I have not left room for damning a company for where they have their products produced but I feel feeding your pets foods from a dirty kitchen is some how morally wrong.

I don't know what to suggest for you.  I have reviewed over 1500 products for cats and dogs hoping to find healthy foods for my pets but I have not been able to find anything.  I cook for my pets at home.  I cook for the boarders who stay with me at my pet hotel, too.

It is a crazy word, isn't it?  I don't understand how these pet food companies can continue to pray on us and our pets.

Hi Susan,

Thanks for all of your advice and your information on the different pet foods! If you do find a dog food that you would recommend, please post it up!

That's great that you cook for so many pets and I am in awe that you are able to, but I don't think I will be able to cook every meal for my pets. If only there was one pet food company that had high enough standards.

Thanks,

Lydia

I switched my 13 year old beagle to Wellness Super5Mix for small breeds.

He eats it okay and seems to like it but does not like the taste as much as "Chicken Food for the Dog Lover's Soul - Senior Formula".

After eating the Wellness brand he developed a very foul body odor after around 3 days of eating Wellness brand so that is why I switched him to Chicken Soup brand.

Thanks for the great site Susan and I always recommend people to buy a small bag of different brands because dog's are unique (like humans) and there is no "one size fits all" brand.

I am also comparing these dog foods and am unhappy with the natural flavor in Wellnee, and with the canola oil in Canidae (a bad oil). It looks like I will go with Life's Abundance....

Sorry, I am sleep-deprived. Canidae has the natural flavors and Wellness has the canola oil (increases autoimmune responses). It looks like Life's Abundance also has natural flavors, so I am still searching...

Wellness is my choice since I first tried it for my little allergy ridden Westie. He is doing well on the Small Breed 5 mix which I find him to really like. I have tried all sorts of high end brands and wont go back to any of them since he go so ill a few years ago with the contaminated rice mess.
