Western Digital or WD as it is lovingly termed as is a name which is relatively common to any average computer user. Such like other storage solution providers like Seagate, Hitachi, and Western digital has also been on this field for quite a long time, nearly 20 years to be precise. The world has not forgotten the Centaur series of hard drives which had secured the place of WD amongst the others. Consumer and enterprise products have been manufactured by them and the Western Digital My Passport Essential 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive WDME3200TN is one of the recent additions to the list.

Generally speaking, the My Passport series is the external drive wing of Western Digital. My Passport Elite and My Passport Essential have been the major market movers since they were introduced. If you are looking for a portable hard drive which has got performance as well as looks, then look no further because the Western Digital My Passport Essential 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive WDME3200TN is the one you should be investing on.

The technical specifications are listed in the following paragraph. Just like the Elite series, this Essential series also runs on a 2.5 inch hard drive, which is spinning at about 2500 rpm. The cache of the device is 8MB. The 2.5 inch hard drives being utilized in Essential series are also known as Scorpio Class. The weight of the product is also quite low, tipping the scales at 180 gms. Unlike the other portable hard drives in the market, this model has a quite operation and the heating up of the product is also reduced to a larger extent, thanks to the innovative constructional.

Power conversation has always been the hallmark of western digital products and the hard disks spin down when being idle to reduce the power consumption. Lighting in the form of an LED is provided near the mini USB port to indicate that the device is plugged in and ready to rock. The device is plug and plays compatible, and it does not need extra drivers to make it fully functional.

The author had tested the device extensively and found that it has an average read speed of 32.9 MB per second and write speeds of 30.5 MB per second. Access time of the drive is rather large and was found to be 16.8 ms. Looking at the impressive average read and write speeds, it can be easily deduced that the product can be used for extensive files transfers. The western digital sync software is placed on the hard drive itself, instead of a separate CD.

Encryption using 128 bit is also established easily on the drive. The above mentioned application is largely windows only compatible. Linux and Mac fans have to wait for some more time. One of the annoying feature of the software is that it auto runs. Whenever the use is not needed, such auto runs can be a pain. Scratches and fingerprints can be easily formed on the casing.

What you fail to mention is the WD has fatal failures in their drives, especially the 1TB. While they do replace the drives with an RMA, it is still a pain.

Many of the drives, end up clicking their way to hell, with no return trip.

I am sure Seagate and Hitachi must have similar problems.
