Imagine you are out on a long journey. The whole family is having fun. And then the baby starts crying. You do have extra diapers, but you don’t want to throw away the costly cloth diaper that he is already wearing. This is when you would need a wet bag.

Wet bags are waterproof bags which can hold wet diapers, swimming trunks, shoes or pretty much anything that is to be sealed away. If you don’t want the odor to get out, it won’t! It is as simple as that! They hold wet and dirty diapers with ease and without leaks. And on laundry day, all one has to do is throw the bag along with the diapers right into the dryer and washer.

Now, let us go into the making of good quality wet bags. The interior of a wet bag is a thick waterproof PUL, and the exterior is just plain cotton fabric. The trick is that the layers are sewn in separately to eliminate wicking, leaking, or tearing. Usually the bags close with a double drawstring. This allows for easy closing and opening. The standard measurements range from 10”x10” to 20”x20”.

One can try to make a wet bag at home, but it really is not advisable as it is a very crucial piece of equipment. Any leaks, and the entire family vacation could go haywire. But just to explore the possibilities, it is not that difficult. Select a material, say terry cotton or flannel or hemp. This should constitute the exterior of the bag. Sew in a layer of a different material in between the two layers of terry. The inner layer must be a waterproof material, which is thick and hardy. Use draw strings for the mouth of the bag.

Now that we have explored all the possibilities, it is up to you to go out and get it. Your neighborhood pharmacy might have these in stock. Just check with them. Else, look for it on the internet. The next time you order your cloth diapers online just be sure to pick up a wet bag or two; one for home and one for travel.
