Martin Waters Spurn Point's A.I.R-What A Rubbish Art Exhibition
68Misleading title
The title of this hub will have deliberately lead you astray. Far from being rubbish Martin Waters current exhibition at the Beverly Art Gallery, Yorkshire, is fabulous. However, each work of art has been made from waste or rubbish which Martin has collected along the coastline at Spurn Point, at the Humber Estuary.
Lost Property – Found Object Artworks By Martin Waters
The lovely market town of Beverley, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, is currently holding an exhibition of Martin Waters work. Martin is the artist in residence for Spurn Point. Spurn is at the North Bank of the River Humber estuary's tip with the North Sea. This long curving round shape, of this part of the opening of the Humber Estuary, is very much under threat. It has been under threat of coastal erosion for many years but it would seem that now Spurn’s days are numbered.
Spurn is a largely unspoilt area where local’s go for some much needed sea air or for bird watching or the like. At its narrowest point Spurn has the River Humber on one side and the North Sea close by on the other. It makes a perfect peaceful haven from the 21st Century's stresses and strains.
Martin Waters recent project has seen him creating works of art from the strange diversity of objects and waste washed up on Spurn’s beaches. His exhibition at Beverly Art Gallery, Lost Property – Found Object Artworks By Martin Waters has some eye catching works of art created from the most unlikely sources. Baby's pacifiers or dummies for example have been placed together to make an unusal piece of art.
One apparent canvas of large dots is made up of the coloured, plastic tops, of smartie sweet tubes. These tops are always made up of assorted colours and each one has a letter on it. However the piece of art has the word beach spelled out of the red tops. It reminds me of one of those tests to check if you are colour blind.
Each visitor to the exhibition is treat to many such similar catchy pieces of work that to my mind are ingenious and very pleasing to the eye. A board with a selection of rubber gloves standing proud as if waving from the sea and a ball made up entirely of plastic cutlery are amongst the exhibits.
I am not especially a fan or a foe of modern art but like this type of work. It utilises what is on offer and would otherwise simply be waste or a hazard on the beach. If you are in the area a visit to this exhibition may prove interesting. Beverley is a lovely market town and there is plenty nearby. Beverley Gallery offers plenty to see.
If you like your art slightly wacky, or are just open minded to many different forms of art, this exhibition and Martin's work may be for you. The artist has offered many explanations for the thinking behind his work but nothing definite. It appears that he has always been a person who collects things. He does like the sense of creating order out of chaos and also is fascinated by the human history behind the objects he finds, which have drifted onto the beach.
Whatever the reasoning behind the art I can only say that I find his work very easy on the eye and at times very intriguing. For those who may fancy a visit the exhibitions is at:-

HI Ethel - what a little gem of a Hub. I love recycling art - might have to go beachcombing at the weekend!
Thanks Peggy and Sufidreamer. I too think it is fab to make such art from someone else's waste. It is a terrific exhibition and Martin's work is so easy on the eye and yet challenging.
My youngest brother is an artist and he is more into modern art too. Nice hub.
Thanks Mel
Hi Ethel, this is exactly the kind of art that makes me smile, and makes my husband fume! There is a surprising beauty in ordinary, everyday objects. It's just about how they are presented, and the meaning they are given. I love the picture of the dummies!
I know just what you mean Amanda. However Martin's work is just so catchy that I love it.

Ha! You are correct in that the title is misleading. Like you I think it is clever to make art from "found" objects and it serves a dual purpose. Nice job on this hub.
