What Are The Best Careers To Major In?

Granted, careers might not change, but I've recently heard that most of the jobs that exist 10 years from now don't even exist today. Knowledge is doubling ever year, and undboutedly more frequently in the next few years. 3000 books were printed today alone! See the "Shift Happens" video below for the full impact.

How does this effect choosing a major or a career?

While in college, learn what you can, and learn how to learn and how to think. Learn how to speed-read and how to process large volumes of information. Learn how to research what discoveries have already been made, so you don't have to re-invent the wheel. Learn about the coming future and world megatrends. Study history to learn from the past, i.e. see how the world power has shifted many times.

I just posted another "hub page" on "How to be Financially Stable", where I talked about Robert Kiyosaki's books (The Rich Dad Poor Dad series). My advice to a college student is to learn more about money, which is usually they one thing they don't teach in school. No matter what career path you choose, take some business classes, learn about investing, stocks, bonds, mergers, acquisitions, etc... Outside of yoru college classes, read the Rich Dad books and start becoming financially astute. Don't leave college in debt up to your ears!

If you are in the USA, choose a career that cannot be outsourced to China and India. (Again, the video below is a MUST-SEE!) Wherever you live, remember that the world is becoming smaller, and we are now competing with billions of people for the same jobs. There are more honor students in India than there are students in the USA!

I would suggest even learning the Mandarin language (as well as Spanish). Over 22 dialects are spoken in India, so I'm not sure how practical that would be.

People will have to specialize more and more on the job. I'm currently a consultant on Microsoft products such as BizTalk and SharePoint. Now that I have learned BizTalk 2006, Biztalk 2008 is already being announced. SharePoint 2007 came out, and I'm reading 5 or 6 books on it. As a 47-year old, I have to keep up, or the youngsters will have all the good jobs.

Investors will have to become more technical. Learn about GNR - the three fields I would recommend for careers: Genetics - Nanotech - Robotics.

Ray Kurzweil, in his book "The Singularity" lays out one view of the next 45 years. He predicts that "The Singularity" will occur around 2045. This the point beyond which we cannot predict, where perhaps men and machines (computers) merge into something totally new. It sounds weird at first, but read his book! He spends a large part of the book talking about the GNR (Genetics/Nano/Robotics trends). The curve below is showing the geometric growth of knowledge, and it's about to asymptotic, which means we almost the point on the curve where it curves sharply upward to the unknown.

I have also included the very interesting "Graduation 2020 Speech" (video on page below). It is told looking back to 2007 where a first grader enters school. Imagine what changes there will be over the next 13 years. No, let the video tell you.
