Learning To Stay Yeast Infection Free

Here are two good reasons to find out what causes a yeast infection:

  1. If you are well informed you will know what to do in the event you do get a yeast infection.
  2. If you know what causes a yeast infection you can take steps to avoid the things that cause them to rear their ugly heads and reduce the likelihood of getting one.

Causes

There are differing opinions on what the real culprit(s) are. Some underlying factors may come in to play and trigger the infection such as:

  • Wearing jeans that are too tight
  • Some inks, dyes, or perfumes may trigger allergic reactions that bring on the infection
  • A diet high in sugar will give you a high sugar level in your urine, much like that of a diabetic, potentially leading to yeast infection
  • Additives in laundry products
  • Steroids such as the type used to treat arthritis, lupus, and asthma
  • Douching
  • Using scented feminine products (tampons, pads, sprays)
  • Additives in bubble bath and bath salts

The main cause for yeast infections is a compromised immune system due to illness or the use of antibiotics. Antibiotics don't differentiate between the 'good' and 'bad' bacteria in your system. They just 'nuke it all'. This causes an imbalance in your system and allows the yeast that is naturally present to multiply too rapidly.

When I have to take antibiotics, I pick up several containers of yogurt with live cultures and make sure to each at least one a day. This seems to help reduce my chances of yeast infection. If you just can't stand the thought of yogurt, you could try acidophilus capsules. They are available at health food stores.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of a yeast infection include: a thick, white vaginal discharge, itching, swelling and redness in the vulva and the vaginal areas, a burning sensation while urinating, and pain during sexual intercourse. If you suspect or know that you have a yeast infection, you should not have sex until you have the infection cleared completely. For one thing, it is painful and you can pass the infection to your partner. (this is one time it is not nice to share! )

Treatment

Most mild cases of yeast infection can be treated with over the counter antifungal medicines. Your symptoms should be cleared or close to it in 7 days. If you have a particularly stubborn infection, it would be wise to consult your health care provider.

Conclusion

Finding out what was triggering my yeast infections has helped me to remain yeast infection free for many years now. Now that you know what causes a yeast infection and what the possible triggers are, you will be better prepared if one should sneak up on you.
