Heart Disease - What Causes Heart Attacks

By HealthTip

Heart attacks, heart disease or cardiovascular disease, you take your pick what you want to call it. Myself Gregory House, House to you lot and my assistant 13 call it a disease that can be easily avoided. Fact however remains both the USA and the UK have the highest death rate to heart disease. If you take a heart attack the chances of you living are 49 out of a 100, the other 51 die and of the 49 that survive you are a walking time bomb.

7 Main Risk Factors For a Heart Attack

Last night I asked this question to 13 and being the smart chick she is she got all 7 right so I am asking you now to stop reading and write down what you think the 7 are. Then return and read on and see if you were just as smart as 13, I didn't ask Foreman because the guy pisses me off.

Smoking.

For me anybody that smokes needs a slap in the face with 13s wet pants. Firstly it clearly says on the pack " Smoking Kills", they mean it kills you not the guy across the street well unless he smokes as well which in my theory leaves just 47 more saps to bite the bullet.

Smoking damages the lining of the arteries which leads to a buld up of fatty material in the arteries, you so know that's heading for an unhappy ending. The carbon monoxide in the cigarette smoke reduces the oxygen that the blood can carry to the heart, not looking good is it. The nicotine stimulates the body to produce adrenaline which makes that heart beat ever so fast and hell is it just me or is your blood pressure rising, aren't you glad you had that cigarette. Smoking also puts the blood at risk of clotting, out of all 7 risks having your daily puff is the worst, enjoy that drag, I am sure I will see you pass me on a hospital trolley someday real soon.

High Blood Pressure

Number 2, no not a new member of my team, just number 13 ok. Number 2 is high blood pressure but it is easy to avoid. Not doing enough physical activity, so get up off your fat backside and go a walk. Being overweight, well you really didn't think all that drink and food was just going out the window did you.?

Having too much salt can increase your blood pressure, there is enough salt in food so I myself found this easy to cut down on, Drinking too much alcohol but worry not as you can have a few glasses of wine or a couple of beers, it's when you overindulge that your blood pressure shoots through the roof. Plus not eating enough fruit and vegetables so get munching on those carrots and slip an apple into your lunch each day, keeps that heart attack at bay.

High Cholesterol

Ok Cholesterol is really boring so I got 13 to type this because my leg is starting to hurt a bit so over to 13. Hey guys nice to meet you all, 13 here and I hope to save a few lives with this information. Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in the blood, bad news is too much of it in the blood can increase your risk of heart problems.

There are two types of Cholesterol one harmful and one protective. LDL is the harmful one so you need to keep this one low. HDL is the good one so you need to keep it high, I know it all sounds confusing, it was for me too until I starting working for House.

The main cause of high Cholesterol is eating too much saturated fat so you need to cut down on fatty food to reduce LDL and get some regular physical activity in to raise your HDL. If you think you have a Cholesterol risk see your Doctor who might put you on a low dose Statin to reduce your levels. Right I have a date with Foreman, House can tell you the last 4 risks.

The Other 4 Heart Disease Risks

Nice of 13 to just leave, one can't get the staff these days. The last 4 risks are pretty basic and you all can easily avoid them. Physical Inactivity, Being Overweight, Having Diabetes and of course the Family history of Heart Disease. For me the family history one can be a bit hit or miss because your father might have been a heavy smoker who sat on his ass everyday, or your mother might have had a drink problem in which case the gene factor might not have even come into play.

Physical Inactivity and Being Overweight, do I need to really waste my valuable time telling you how to overcome those 2 risks. Guess i do as you are sat there on your laptops, log off now and go a walk round the block or your next trip round the block might be in a wooden box all engraved lovingly with your own little name on it.

Diabetes I am going to discuss in another hub as well as other methods you can take to avoid having a heart attack. Right now I am running late for a dinner appointment with Wilson and he's buying, not that I ever do. This is House signing off, I will be back tomorrow with a heart update.

This is hard hitting and every bit delivered as I would have expected of you House. Brutally done, brutally honest. I'd better think on giving up #1 ASAP.

Point taken, message clearly understood. Thankyou.

Rated up - you mean b*****d :)

Cutting straight to the hard facts... very well! Like The Frog, I am staring down #1 as well. I really like your style, if only I knew how to the schedule and channel of your shows, I'd love to see. (I am a bit of a knob about the telly here)

Welcome, House! :)

Of course you like my style, who doesn't. My shows are on Sky every Sunday night and Season 7 is just starting. In it I am supposed to act like I am in a Mental Hospital, do you know hard that was for me, so writing medical on hubs will be a breeze. Thank you for the welcome Aware, if you ever ill make an appointment with 13 ; )

Hey Dr. House, I love your Hub, well not how it made me feel but the info and writing is critically important and delivered with humor, only the video is sooo scary, where do you find these pertinent tools??? I want to add one thig in the UK the emergency # maybe 999, but the # in the USA is 911. If I were to interview you would you, been using your natural born British accent, or your American accent as you do on your show?

Great hub and wriiten so well I doubt that I could compete with this one. I went on a course yesterday on what to do when someone has a heart attack as hubby was feeling a little nervous in the event he had another one I would not have a clue what to do. It was the best 2 hours I have had in a long time and I feel if the worst happened I could now keep his heart pumping untill the paramedics arrived. I was told the best number to ring especially on a mobile is 112 instead of 999. This info is good if you are on a mobile as lots of people have problems getting through to 999.

I am actually the First Aider in my workplace Helen and was at a refresher course a month before my heart attack which I am writing about later today. But for the stuff I learnt at that course I am convinced I wouldn't have survived, I still feel nervous about having another one, hope yer hubby is a lot stronger now, cheers for the comment.

Hi Health,

Good hub. However, people who can write info hubs are a dime a dozen. I even did a hub reviewing Sony's PSP Go video game system, and I had never seen one. Please write your humerous articles. That is why we miss you.

Here are my opinions: Don't take Statin drugs, they are dangerous. Take B vitamins, choline/ lecithin, and minerals for better health. -Carol

I like your point about filtering out our parents' habits when assessing hereditary factors. My Dad had high blood pressure, emphysema and chronic heart failure, and he had a stroke in his 60's. I never worried about myself, because I assumed it was all caused by his smoking (Senior Service, unfiltered, 20 a day - how he lived to 85 I have no idea).

Recently I've discovered that my sister (who's several years older than me)has high blood pressure and has had a "silent" heart attack (i.e. she had one and didn't know). So now I'm thinking I shouldn't be so smug!

HealthTip profile image

HealthTip  says:

Now Senior Service indeed are worse than the Woodbine, I once actually tried one, only once ! My Mum has always had low blood pressure plus my Dad had high, my last taken reading 3 weeks ago was perfect 118/80.

Sorry to hear about your sister but they call it the silent heart attack mainly because the person doesn't know the signs. I could have avoided my heart attack because silent signs were there months before which I will discuss in my next hub. Nice to see you here Marisa, enjoy yer weekend !

Even with all that said, some will still find it hard to quit, cigs are 5 times more addicting than cocaine although not as deadly or impoverishing as a cocaine habit!

I haven't smoked all year praise and thanks to God,but the urge beckons, it calls out to me like a fine lady or should I say fine ladies out a fantasy,it does, when I'm feeling low,it's so hard sometimes but I manage by the grace of God to resist!

This hub on why to quit smoking is awesome,

may be now you can make a hub on how to quit smoking successfully and what to prepare for,

Cheers!

Is there a doctor in the House? :) Damn, thought I was doing fairly well till I read this. Let me see what I've going against me that never really thought about before: family history, slightly high bad cholesterol, likes to drink my red wine, physical inactivity( however, this is only temporary, as soon as I get my cast off I will be back to the fitness center) and could stand to lose 10 or 20 pounds (but hey, I truely enjoy good food and don't consider my womanly curves a bad thing.) And yes, I can already hear your mumblings and rumblings, so, give it to me straight.

HealthTip profile image

HealthTip  says:

Lovemyyorkies the family history I had but good news is heart treatment has way advanced in the last 10 years. The high cholesterol you can bring down and I will be doing a hub on that. Red wine in just 2 glasses ( small ones ) can actually benefit your heart, so there you have it, fact remains you can actually seriously reduce your risks of taking a heart attack.

Oh and cheers for yer comment ; )

Philent one thing I realised after my heart attack was either to dwell on it or just continue with my sense of humor, I picked the latter. Just keep fit, build your heart muscle up, trust me that will protect you.
